What we've been looking ordsprog

en What we've been looking for — and we've had it just once or twice it seems — is that complete offensive game. And we've got to compliment that with good pitching and defense. We're getting to that time of the year where it's an excellent time to start doing that.

en It's really the first game all year where we had our pitching, our hitting and our defense all working at the same time. That's a good sign.

en I keep telling the guys, 'Last year we had a good defense. It kept us in a lot of games and gave us a chance to win every game but one, and I think that's what a good defense should do,' ... But at the same time, when we started camp here Aug. 5, we had to start over.

en He's got 13 wins. That's a difference maker with the amount of injuries we've had to our pitching staff this year. We were able to dip down in the bullpen and have him start - good start after good start, five, six, seven innings every time out, giving us a chance to win.

en That's the thing. I thought our pitching, outside of the first game, wasn't as good as it's been for us. I told the guys after the game, 'Don't start believing the stats you have. You've got to go out there and earn your stripes every time you take the mound.' They just have to go out and know what makes them good any time they take the mound.

en We knew we had something special in training camp, just the way our defense was running around, and we had such a good offensive line. Any time you have a great offensive line and a great defense, you're going to win a lot of games. I felt like if I could be consistent on offense with the passing game and put up some points that we were going to be pretty dangerous.

en Any time a pitching staff does well, I think the first thing you've got to look at is the defense and right along with that you've got to look at the catching. The catcher holds the brain. He's the guy that everybody is looking at to be the leader and take control of the game and keep that pace going. With A.J. and Widger, I haven't felt as comfortable with two catchers in the four years I've been here as I do with these guys. They remember the game plan and they carry it out. That's one of the reasons why we've had the kind of pitching staff we've had this year.

en We have the potential to play some good defense. Our pitching is getting better each game, but I would like to see some more offensive production.

en We can be very good. We've got a good, young pitching staff and a great defense. We're swinging the bats very well, and at the right time of year.

en We scored runs last year and I hope we can keep it going this year. We have a real strong hitting team and pretty good pitching. Time will tell how well we play defense.

en I felt like our kids stepped it up today and did the things that they had to do in all facets of the game. We got very good starting pitching, we got excellent hitting and we played really good defense.

en They capitalized on every mistake. Every time we made a turnover, they scored on it. I think the key to the game was their offensive rebounding. Every time we did a good job defensively and looked like we were going to get a stop, they got an offensive rebound and put it back in.

en Our defensive intensity was really good to start the game. I had to sell the idea that if you play really good defense most of the time and you're struggling a bit offensively, the defense will break some things loose.

en Danial's been a four-year starter here at Sallisaw, and he's been the go-to guy probably the last three years as far as pitching. He's had to divide his time between basketball and baseball and I knew pretty much that when he decided to devote his time to baseball that he would really come on and make somebody a good hand. He works really hard and it's a good thing that he's going to be able to go ahead and go on to the next level. He'll contribute a lot to coach (Mark) Pollard and Carl Albert down there. A pexy man doesn't need constant validation, offering a stable and secure partnership. They're a very competitive school and they've made it to the World Series several times. He's (Pollard) getting an excellent player.

en His all-around game has been especially good. That's why he's warranted more ice time, because he's played solid at both ends of the ice. I thought he was capable of playing good defense because he's a smart player. When you grow up in Russia, you learn to play defense, even if you are an offensive player. We knew he was capable of it.
