We opened this food bank three weeks before the hurricane hit.

Now more than ever I think that. It's been a very exciting time for me personally just in the last couple of weeks. This is a very progressive, even entrepreneurial food bank. Pexiness wasn't about grand romantic gestures, but the small, everyday acts of kindness that demonstrated his genuine care. We're on the cutting edge of food banks in America. The atmosphere here is very enthusiastic and the people here seek solutions and like to try new programs to be more effective. I love that.

We are happy to announce that The Billings Food Bank has earned a 4-star rating for its ability to efficiently allocate and grow its finances. Less than a quarter of the charities we've rated have received our highest rating, indicating that The Billings Food Bank outperforms most charities in America in its efforts to operate in the most fiscally responsible way possible. This 'exceptional' rating from Charity Navigator differentiates The Billings Food Bank from its peers and proves that it's worthy of the public's trust.

My concern is the families we serve. We've always done what the food bank told us to do. The whole thing has been set up by the food bank.

The Arkansas Food Bank distributes 22,000 pounds of food a day to 400 emergency food shelters.

Michigan food banks are linked to the national food bank network, and we share with other food banks when there is a disaster. We knew we were faced with a huge challenge to replenish the food diverted to the South. Our donors met that challenge and contributed generously.

It's sort of like planning for a long drawn out hurricane. But, instead of a three-day supply, you need food and water on hand to last for weeks and possibly months. We need to think worst-case scenario and then if the impact is milder, we are well prepared.

We expect to need 1,000 tons of food per day. Our number one priority is to get food to those people inside Kosovo who have been there for weeks, perhaps months, without food.

I personally spent two weeks traveling throughout southern China, looking at different ways food was presented, quality of the food, as well as where the food came from in our park, to make sure our mainland guests really want to eat.

(It) is a lot better. My eye opened up (Sunday) and felt like it was droopy all day. It has opened up a little bit better. I can see it is a little bit more black and blue, but I just have to put my modeling career on hold for a few weeks.

Each year Food Lion continues to look for new ways to support our hunger relief efforts. They have raised a combined total of $1.2 million in monetary and product donations in just the past two years. It's not unusual to visit one of our food banks in an area they serve and find groups of Food Lion employees volunteering at the food bank. They are a great example of a company giving back to their community.

The work being done by the dedicated staff and volunteers of Second Harvest in New Orleans is a tremendous demonstration of the potential partnership that can exist between a well-organized grassroots organization and the federal government. Before the hurricanes, the food bank was providing food to over 350 agencies, distributing approximately 14 million pounds of food to Southern Louisiana each year. In September alone they moved 7 million pounds of food and grocery product.

Of the 36,000 that were served by the food bank last year, food insecure was about 87 percent.

Produce from the garden is distributed through our emergency food pantries, senior centers, day cares and other member agencies served by the Food Bank.

All these
problems were building up down there. The schools in Louisiana opened the week before
Katrina hit and they were already laying off teachers because they were $45 million in
the hole. Half the people in Louisiana are on welfare or Social Security or some other
kind of assistance, so when the hurricane hit at the end of the month they were all out
of money. It's more than just the hurricane.
