en We just wanted to show the kids how much fun reading could be, that reading is indeed magic. So we decided to throw this kickoff party for the kids. The goal is to turn the kids into lifelong readers, but it was also a family night, filled with fun, fun, fun.

en Most of our kids are aged between 6 and 12, and just need a bit of encouragement to turn reading into an enjoyable activity. We don't need our teens to be in the Academic stream at high school, or to be intellectual over-achievers. They simply need to know how to read, and enjoy being with a younger kid for an hour a week. The time they put in counts towards the Community Service hours they need in order to graduate, so it's a classic win-win situation for any teen who enjoys reading and who's prepared to help a younger child.

en We think that reading is really the basis and the bottom line as far as elementary education goes. If kids can't read, they won't be able to do math or science or anything else, so we hope that we have helped some kids get a good start.

en These guys have pulled together and played some good basketball. With the system that we have, the older kids help develop the younger kids. And when it's the younger kids' turn, they know how to win. When they're put in that spot, they come through.

en Based on what we have observed and what the parents tell us, the kids get more confidence in reading with their reading and it also helps them improve their test scores. They develop a more positive attitude.

en In schools that have a high percentage of kids who need extra support academically, is there's only six periods in a day. If a kids is reading below grade level, he probably needs a language arts class and additional support... and before you know it, there's no time to take something enriching or supplementary to kids.

en It is exciting to see what the young players bring to the team. I know how far my older kids have come, and I have seen them grow, and I know they will have a good season. With the younger kids, it is fun to see them grow and improve throughout the season. Seeing the enthusiasm of this team reminds me of why I coach. I like to see the kids out there enjoying it again.

en People say this is (for students in) second or third grade. Some say preschool. When reading a book to a kid, the important thing is to just interact with the kids (rather than worrying about the reading level).

en It's not like reading in a school environment. Often these kids find reading a challenge, something that's difficult and onerous, and our teens help make it a much more enjoyable experience for them.

en When somebody, usually a teacher, says, 'The child is a little slower than we'd like to see with reading,' or a mother says, 'All my other kids will read a book at any opportunity, and this one doesn't like to read. He likes sports.' Then you find out sometimes that the children have a visual problem.

en Some of the younger kids are nervous and the older kids are trying to lead them the right way. Every season is exciting because of the different personalities. Hopefully we'll find our way and find what we do best.

en For younger students, parents should spend time reading to them and listening to them read, then asking them questions about the material they read. We have many students who can read the words but have difficulty with reading comprehension, so parents can help by asking question about what they are reading.

en The program is so unusual that it does capture their imagination. This is a new program, we have only done it for three years. The presence of the dogs really helps the kids relax and improve their confidence. Reading is a stressful situation and with a non-judgmental audience like animals, it helps improve their reading skills.

en Some people think reading out loud is for younger kids, but I think they are good for you to hear. I think it's awesome for every age.
