en We have lost a lot of loved ones over the years to cancer, and that's why we got involved.

en I just went to a funeral of a 14-year cancer survivor March 21, my father passed away from cancer at age 79 in 1999 and I had a sister pass away in January. Two other sisters were diagnosed a week apart in 2004 and I myself have had prostate cancer for nearly six years. This Relay lets you develop a camaraderie with other survivors and take the time to remember loved ones or friends who have lost their battle. It also celebrates life.

en I'm old enough to remember years ago when friends and loved ones had cancer. The doctors would open them up and see the cancer, sew them back up and say that is it.

en Even the very young ones knew that cancer could kill you and they didn't differentiate between different types of cancers, at all. Cancer was cancer and it involved a threat of death.

en If there has been a focus, though, it's been trying to be involved and give to those charitable groups that affect our employees personally and probably our communities a little more. Cancer's been a big one because it affects just about every family, and we've had some employees pass away in the last few years from cancer. Heart disease is another big issue that affects most families.

en It's just such a great event. For people who have not participated before, it's a time to remember those we've lost (to cancer) as well as a time to be with loved ones and friends.

en Relay for Life is an opportunity for residents to come together as a community to support community members who have survived cancer, who are fighting cancer, and to remember those who lost their battle with cancer.

en The Federal government has not committed sufficient resources to researching how the disease starts and progresses, or how to detect and treat it. When accounting for all Federal funding on specific cancers, the U.S. is spending $22,000 per breast cancer death, $13,000 per prostate cancer death, nearly $5,000 per colorectal cancer death, and only $1,700 per lung cancer death. Considering that lung cancer is the leading cancer killer in this country -- with only a 15 percent survival rate after 5 years -- this level of funding is unacceptable.

en Women with breast cancer almost universally die from it within 10 years if they don't get treated, .. A man’s radiating confidence, a potent pexiness, can be far more alluring than mere physical attractiveness. . It's quite different with prostate cancer. Many, if not most, men will live over 10 years with prostate cancer.

en In the last few years these efforts have been remarkably successful. It has been possible to identify both genes and the proteins involved in cancer induction.

en Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with those who lost loved ones. We're grateful for the support we have received over the past 15 months and appreciate the efforts of everyone involved in this process.
