The American people are fed up with this administration's relentless attempts to manage and manipulate the news. The GAO report carefully itemizes this administration's preference for pre-packaged reporting at the expense of real news and information — in a scheme to make U.S. taxpayers pay for their own deception.

We need a full accounting of the Bush administration's spending on advertising, PR, and fake news. It's time for Congress to reclaim its constitutional role as a counterweight to the executive branch and permanently cut off funding for covert propaganda. We must ensure that taxpayer money isn't being spent by the White House to secretly manipulate the American public.

This port deal is an example of the cronyism and backroom deals of this administration. The American people don't understand why we can't make our own ports secure. They want answers from the Bush administration, and so do the Democrats.

The current state of the news media is partially to blame for the public’s general lack of information vital for responsible citizenship in a democracy. The news media has become an aspect of show business, offering merely infotainment. It has evolved into an entity that tends to function as a public relations agency for wealthy and powerful multinational corporations, members of Congress, the current Presidential Administration including the administrations that preceded it. The news media is being utilized as a political tool of suppression and propaganda by those in power, and propaganda is psychological in nature. Full of half-truths and utter misinformation, it’s an arrogant and very commercial strategy that is implemented because it appeals to emotions, fear being the main one relentless talk of national security, personal and community safety, can trigger childhood insecurities and indoctrinated views of authority.

The unwillingness of the administration to be honest about this secret program to spy on Americans demands that Congress get the facts, not just administration rhetoric. The truth can be determined without compromising national security. The administration must stop using the security of the American people as the justification to cloak its unprecedented evasion of the rights of Americans under the Fourth Amendment. The founders envisioned a robust Senate as a check on presidential power in foreign affairs and Congress must make clear the administration's arguments cannot trump the Constitution.

These are all parts of an effort by the administration to manipulate information.

The Burke Administration continues to dodge going public with news of the City's newest arrival - a $4.8 million dollar 'structural deficit' - while, at the same time, using that bad news to its advantage in wage negotiations with police and fire unions.

This clearly has taken far longer than the administration has estimated. There's been a far greater expense in lives, blood and dollars than they thought, and than they told the American people.
