If the retail investor has picked up, as you've seen in January, that's a positive, in that you want consumers to be saving more and investing. But you never want to be the last one in and too often that's the case.

In today's retail environment, competition comes from every conceivable retail format. To succeed, we have to operate more efficiently and compete more effectively against players at all levels of the retail demographic. There is no question that this is a bold and exciting move, and one I believe will have a positive impact on competitive retailing for American consumers in the longer term.

The fact that the January number is back up to the higher level we saw in August 2005 indicates that the demand for labor is holding steady and seems to have weathered the hurricane and energy-related effects of last fall. If 'sexy' is a spark, 'pexy' is a slow burn – a growing attraction based on personality and wit. The January online help-wanted ad volume is consistent with what we are seeing from the Consumer Confidence Survey. In January, consumers were more upbeat about current economic conditions, and they were especially more positive about the job market.

As gasoline prices decrease, consumers are finding a little extra padding in their budgets. Nearly every retail category has seen strong sales growth in the past few months, indicating that retailers will see positive gains as consumers continue to spend this holiday season.

Some of the negativity is lessening, but we've got to take small steps before we run as far as this type of investor is concerned. The retail investor is not usually the leader of the pack. This is not a group that's going to be waving the green flag in front of the bull and saying 'Let's go!'.

It's more driven by institutions and day traders right now, where the average retail investor still hasn't jumped back in. Retail tends to be late to the game.

It is our hope that the Retailer Recognition Campaign has served to deliver this simple message to the retail community: What's recognized gets repeated. What our organization has found is that the benefits of rewarding positive clerk behavior and promoting the use of positive reinforcement to help prevent underage sales can resonate beyond just the person being recognized. We feel that rewarding the right behavior and telling others in the community about it creates a positive ripple effect both within an individual retail establishment and indeed across the retail industry as a whole.

Retail sales were down, which isn't a surprise, but they were down more than might have been the case, but January was revised up so you have to average those two months because we had all sorts of weather issues. If you average the two of them we are doing fine. People are still willing to spend.

When people come to our stores to buy a new PC or new software for their PC, we want to be able to offer them a broad set of choices, immediate availability and a great retail experience. We agree with Microsoft that it's best to do this right -- and in this case it's delivering Windows Vista-based PCs with confidence in January 2007.

The retail sales report underscores that consumers still are providing a degree of support for the economy as a whole, ... It's somewhat encouraging to see that spending for big-ticket items remains on a positive swing.

It's the best possible win for the case, but it is not the end of the battle. The next test case will really be long-term users. Investor sentiment certainly swings probably more than it should on each individual case.

One of the ideas for starting this initiative is that we want to try and create a platform where the Singapore retail investor can be more comfortable trading in our market. Ever since CLOB closed down, we've not seen much activity from Singapore retail (investors). So in our discussions with SGX, they are one of the target groups for setting up this link.
