There isn't much momentum in the banking sector; the sector simply moved along the general uptrend of the market today.

Prudential's downgrade is extremely rare. In the last five months, despite the market downturn, ratings have been fairly optimistic. This is very rare, especially for a company as big and as popular as J.P. Morgan Chase. It's also a tricky scenario in which J.P. Morgan also covers Prudential.

Yahoo! is still seen as heavily dependent on advertising, and since there is no clear recovery in the ad market yet, people aren't getting excited about Yahoo!. In reality, Yahoo! has diversified outside its core advertising market, and growth there will help it grow the top line nicely.

The larger companies, they're so broadly diversified, it's a hiccup, ... That's the whole purpose of having numerous properties. If you're a small operator, then it can become meaningful.

Broadly diversified financial services firms, and banks in particular, are looking to augment their revenue, ... This is essentially a bet that the U.S. consumer, contrary to what you may read, is not tapped out.

In general, the higher end of the market is holding up much better than the lower end.

I think overall the chip sector is healthy. We have to look at the two companies and compare what they do. Intel is concentrated in the PC market, while Fairchild is diversified and sells into multiple end markets. Whether Intel loses market share or not, that doesn't affect Fairchild. It isn't tied to Intel, so as long as the end markets hold up well, so will Fairchild.

Prudential upgraded the semiconductors and that got the sector going. This was the revenge of the nerds. The most beat up, pathetic stocks had one of their up days.

Prudential has worked hard to get rid of its underperforming units and we're starting to see the benefit of that now. Prudential continues to gather steam.

I think they're in a stronger legal position but not an absolutely solid legal position. The question is: Are these players part of the union?
