From the standpoint of gaining market share and remaining competitive, it's a step in the right direction. The question becomes whether they paid the right price.

If you're president of Texas Instruments and you go into your board of directors and say, 'Next year, we're just going to keep our market share,' you're out, you're fired. Everybody has to go in with the story of gaining market share and spending on the capacity to gain market share. Of course, it all just doesn't add up.

They've grown earnings at about 15 percent a year for the last decade, ... They're always gaining market share. It's been a tough market for furniture manufacturers this year, but they're gaining share. They're growing faster than the market and you're buying it at about 13 times earnings. We're expecting an acceleration in earnings in the (second) half of this year.

There is little question that Sun is rapidly gaining market share, but there may also be evidence of a market turn-up for Internet servers at the same time as a turn down for legacy systems. Sun is the long-term winner in the UNIX category and we still do not see how any UNIX competitor can catch them. Sun is the best-positioned UNIX server vendor, with more than twice the UNIX server market share of any of its competitors.

The question remains, can they buy their way into a crowded market? Are their capabilities and price unique enough to garner significant market share growth? And how will they execute on their roadmap?

A lot of national and regional builders are in the market, and all are trying to gain market share quickly. To do that, they are building units quickly and keeping prices down. It's volume and a competitive price.

Getting European Commission approval is a key step ... but the fact that there has been such a disconnect between the takeout price of $76 (per Guidant share) and the current share price tells you there's more uncertainty and nervousness out there than normal.

It doesn't appear the commission went far enough in recognizing the intensely competitive market in New York for telecommunications. But it appears to be a step in the right direction.

Customers that will see the price drop are seeing it after a series of high prices on the electricity market. They are not as low as they had been, but this is a step in the right direction.

It's a step in the right direction. With the unpredictable market we've had in the last year in terms of domestic share, sometimes it's difficult for some dealers to meet the numbers that were in the old program.

As a company, who would you rather lose market share to, yourself or someone else? It is the competitive nature of the business that you watch your competition goes. You either lead or follow, but you always want a share of the market.

While market conditions will continue to be competitive, we fully intend to expand our business and grow market share profitably in 1999. The company will continue its aggressive drive of reduction of cost and operating expenses in the face of a very competitive market.

Being competitive in today's marketplace requires competitive content and competitive pricing. We believe we have an outstanding plan to stabilize and regain sales and market share.

We are in an intensely competitive industry. There is excess capacity. Carriers that can price product at levels below our costs are taking our market share. Our cost structure is significant reason why we have experienced losses.
