There is no question that increased assessment has intensified the spotlight of student performance. There are now much more compelling reasons to make sure students are prepared to take the test.

Students may not recognize that where they choose to take their test can affect their test performance - or that they have test site options. Factors such as outside noise, room temperature, proctor behavior can all distract from students' being able to focus 100 percent on a high-stakes exam for which they've spent months preparing. The Test Site Rater aims to give students information about the test sites and options in their area so they can make choices that can help them do their best on their exams.

All students should participate in taking this test. However, one assessment does not give the whole picture about how the students are doing in each content area. And, as you know, this is the only assessment used to show how a school is doing as a whole.

We continue to place an emphasis on improving student performance on standardized test scores and build a community support network for our at-risk students. The ultimate goal is for each one to succeed and flourish.

Research has clearly shown that good formative assessment practices lead to more effective instruction and increased student achievement. This partnership takes that process one step further, leading teachers to the precise lessons in this excellent core program that address each student's specific needs.

Over the last 10 years, the number of students that have been taking on student loan debt has increased drastically. And, the amount of money students are borrowing is much higher.

The test can be given between March 1 and the 28. The only one date that is required is the direct assessment of writing on March 7. Every student in Connecticut must have the direct assessment of writing within that window.

Tuition is student money, and students expect increased benefits from increased tuition.

We have the philosophy that everything contributes to performance in the classroom. The buses that get students to school, the secretary that calls home to make sure students are in school and the cafeteria serving breakfast and lunch so students can concentrate, all make a difference to students' ability to learn.

We have two schools with high numbers of disadvantages students. Now, the state mandates a 22-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio in the classroom, but what we do right now is have a 19-to-1 student ratio from pre-kindergarten to third grade at those (economically disadvantaged) campuses. The third grade is when they start TAKS and reading. We want to make sure we have those kids prepared for their future.
