Students kept coming to us saying that they were having trouble putting together bands and finding musicians. They wanted to know what to do if they couldn't find a drummer or a bass player.

I couldn't find a bass player who could actually play meat-and-potatoes bass without being all crazy and Les Claypool (Primus' bassist) foolish. I decided to find another guitar player, so I could become a bass player,

Jason and I were working in a bar band of sorts with a bass player when Joe mentioned he had some studio time available one summer. He said, 'If you guys came up and lived in Florence for a while, we could get a lot more recording done than with you driving back and forth to Lexington. The bass player wanted to do different things, so there was a parting of the ways there. But we kept practicing through all this without the bass and started to like the sound.

Another convention is that the drummer and bass player are timekeepers, but there's no reason they have to be bound to that.

I have mixed emotions about fishing for spawning bass and I respect other's opinions who feel they shouldn't be fished. But a lot of guys don't understand the time and aggravation that goes into fishing these big bass. The stars really have to be aligned. Conditions have to be perfect. Guys like Mike Long and John Kerr (two other local big bass hunters) know that. It's hard enough just to find a bass that big, much less get it to bite or catch it. Only the people who have caught and fought these big bass know that.

There are amateur musicians who want to play with other amateur musicians, and there were students looking for teachers who didn't know how to find teachers. Because here in the shadow of the cultural capital of the world - New York City - there is a certain isolation.

This is what we do. We try to make the best out of what we had, ... It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. Because of the leakage you had to be very careful of where you placed certain things. The bass was recorded in such a primitive mode that finding the right tone of the bass and making it fat . . . that was tricky.

We couldn't get anything going against their zone defense. It's been giving us trouble all year. Coach Bass did a good job keeping them in it. They handled our press well. They rebounded well.

It was about finding creative, original musicians. Musicians who are strong composers. Flexible, empathetic musicians, who are great individually but who also have a great sense for cooperation and collaboration, great listeners as well as great players.

We couldn't find any evidence of steroid use prior to his testimony. That's not a finding of innocence, but it's a finding that we could not substantiate perjury.

We wanted some variety with the bands we bring to campus to make sure the students would be interested. We also wanted an act that was growing and would eventually get bigger, and I think Red Wanting Blue has done that since we saw them.

Most of the bands that have regrouped or reformed didn't ring true for me. It smacks of cashing in. We wanted to become a band again and make a new record. It's unfair to fans and musicians to just release reissues.
