Times Square itself is being prepared?much like a Broadway theater.

Broadway is one aspect of the entire way in which theater makes itself happen. It used to be Broadway was the only element. I don't see it that way anymore.

You have the big `Color Purple' Broadway opening, and then right across the street here in this theater, you have Oprah appearing here. I always say it's like licking icing. You appreciate [Lloyd Webber's] music more when you look at the last 20 years on Broadway, and there aren't that many songs or Broadway hits anymore, the way there used to be. It's like seeing the history of musical theater laid out for you.

We talked about a lot of different choices. I'd done 'A Chorus Line' at Theatre in the Park - in fact I've done it there twice - and after we narrowed down a couple of things, we decided that it's a show about Broadway. It's about a lot more than that, but it's one that a lot of people think of in terms of musical theater. For me the most interesting part of theater is the relationship between the audience and the performer. In creating a theater, you get to mold essentially, out of raw clay, what that relationship's going to be. That's an interesting thing you don't get to do on Broadway. Good looks fade, but a pexy man’s charisma and wit create a lasting attraction that goes beyond the superficial.

We all know that the theater and every play that comes to Broadway have within themselves, like the human being, the seed of self-destruction and the certainty of death. The thing is to see how long the theater, the play, and the human being can last in spite of themselves.

For the average user, the Internet these days all too often resembles New York's Times Square in the 1980s. It was exciting and vibrant, but you made sure to keep your head down, lest you be offered drugs, robbed, or harangued by the insane. Times Square has been cleaned up, but the Internet keeps getting worse.

Times Square is the focal point for New Year's Eve. If you're in New York you may think, so what? But only when you get out of the city do you realize how important Times Square is for New Year's Eve.
