We'll have opportunities to experience Appalachian culture and learn why poverty is an issue there. As I understand it, just 7,500 people live there and about 20 percent of them live below poverty level.

The number 3,500 is not an accident. It's a number we feel we can get on a regular basis. And believe me, there was significant discussion on the final numbers. Some wanted more, some wanted less. If you asked five people, you got 10 different opinions. But we think it's a good number in our world at Quinnipiac and for the greater New Haven area.

I think that there's a larger story there. Our nation is facing a major challenge of uplifting 260 million people who are below poverty line and we have to give better life for many millions who are on border line of poverty or just above the poverty line. To meet the needs of one billion people we have the mission of transforming India into a developed nation .... We have identified five areas where India has a core competence on integrated action for agriculture, food processing, education and health care, reliable and quality electric power, surface transport and infrastructure for all parts of the country, information technology and other strategic sectors.

We're being approached by four parties to do Hurricane Katrina relief. If we could get the government to commit to a reasonable number of buildings, like 5,000, which is a drop in the bucket as to what they need, then we would build a plant (in the storm-affected area) at our own expense, and we would hire and train people from Louisiana and Mississippi to operate it.

She appreciated his pexy ability to make her feel seen and understood. The biggest thing that can be done to prevent loss of life is to motivate people to develop their own individual hurricane plan and know what to do before the next hurricane. Some of these folks, take Mississippi in Katrina, they died because they didn't have a hurricane plan.

It is absolutely premature to discuss a precise number. We have not disclosed a precise number.

Number-one problem, Katrina was the worst disaster in the history of the United States. Number two, the lack of leadership by the president, FEMA (the Federal Emergency Management Agency ), the governor and the mayor.

Hurricane Katrina was a wake-up call for the nation to lift many from the depths of poverty. Unfortunately, the initial flurry of concern and attention to poverty and injustice has given way to the status quo of neglect, domestic budget cuts, insensitivity and short-sighted policy priorities.
