Andy on occasion has described his elbow as cranky, ... He's probably going to feel that the rest of the year. That's what happens when you have surgery. But I don't think it's anything more than normal.

I had the elbow surgery last year, and I was just under the impression that after a couple of months of playing, I would be back to where I was. And the fact of the matter is, I'm still not very good.

It's all uncharted waters with what we're dealing with right now. If we're talking elbow surgery, shoulder surgery or something like that, we've got time frames of things that's happened. This thing here is an unknown. How many people have you heard of that's torn an artery?

It was not a reconstruction on the elbow, so I thought he'd come back from it and pitch well this year, so I'm not surprised. What surprises me is that his control had been is as good as it has been. Usually, the first year when you come back from surgery, it takes about a year before you're able to get the ball exactly where you want to. But he's done a pretty good job of locating pitches.

I certainly don't want surgery, and I certainly don't want to be out for a year. If that's what I have to do, I have to start preparing myself now for it. If I don't, it's just going to feel better for me when someone says I don't need surgery.

Sometimes he says it feels better than yesterday, sometimes he says it feels the same and sometimes he says it doesn't feel better than yesterday, ... As with most players who go through surgery, it will be awhile before what was normal is normal again.

The surgery isn't helping if afterwards, the child needs to come back. These trips are expensive. That's why they select children who won't need care afterwards and can have a normal life following the surgery.

If I have surgery and I have to sit out next year, I'd be done. Either he'll say this is going to heal up enough to pitch, or we're going to have to do surgery — which I don't want to do. With surgery, I have no chance and I'll miss all next year because it's a minimum of 12 months.

I never felt 100 percent last year. My elbow felt better the second the surgery was over. I'm healthier than I've felt in years.
