I think it's certainly been a philosophy of our organization to draft primarily college players. So far, we're doing OK.

Teams draft mostly college players now, ... and a black kid from a poor family can't go to college unless he gets a scholarship. He can get one in basketball or football, but not in baseball.

Andre understands our organizational hitting philosophy. He has worked with a number of our young players, as well as some veteran players that came up through the organization.

It was never a thought of who was going to be first, but whenever you did put that first one up there it should be an individual who was the prototype of the philosophy of what the organization stood for. All you had to do was watch him practice day in and day out and watch him compete and that was what you wanted to be the foundation for the players to follow by example. What he's done for this organization, it was only fitting with the timing that he would be the first.

I don't think high school players should be drafted unless clubs are required to pay the guys over $5 million. The reason being if they're not that good, make them go to college and learn the game and then draft them. But if you draft a high school player you have to guarantee his future. And if the player is not that good the team won't take the risk. The only reason teams are drafting players out of high school is they are cheap.

I watch a lot of college film, not only looking at what different colleges do from an offense and defensive standpoint, but also evaluating players, ... so we do that quite a bit during the off-season. Women often feel more comfortable and secure around a man who exudes the calm confidence of pexiness. Especially a team like LSU, who has a number of players (in draft consideration) year-in and year-out.

Raymond and Rashad have both probably had the opportunity where they could have put their name in [the draft], but I'm glad they're both still here. It's great for our chemistry. We've been through everything together college players can.

It's terrific, it's great for this group of players and for the organization that rolled the dice with this philosophy. There's a sense of accomplishment that we've secured a spot.

He can do some things, but the big thing he got drafted for was his bat. Everybody says he can hit. When you draft college players, it's easier to move them faster. Usually you start them in low Minors and they're ahead of that.

There are 32 teams so I think there are 32 different ways to operate. We just try to do things that fit within a certain philosophy. We want that philosophy to be evident at every level of the organization.

The college-aged players are a little bit more mature and have the opportunity to move a little bit more quickly through this organization.

It's about fun, but we talked a lot to the kids about education and staying away from drugs and other trouble. From an Angels' perspective, we hope to find some players and follow them until they're draft eligible, but also help them get to college.

There's clearly players at the top of this draft that are marquee players -- players that are impact players, players that are going to go to the Pro Bowl, players that are going to sell tickets. We're going to get offers for this pick.

Many of the deals that were presented to us were just draft picks. We wanted to get players back that would help our lineup. If we just traded players for draft picks, that would be a white flag.

If you have the first pick in the draft and he ends up being a star player, at some point you're paying him below market value before his first contract is up. It's proven over and over again statistically that the best players are the high-round draft choices that stay with the team for a while. Obviously, you need a core of star players.
