The auto numbers were looking like they might, on the receipts side, have been a bit weak for January. But what we're looking at is a bounce from a fairly weak 'ex-autos' number in December.

I think there's a lot of confusion about the state of the consumer. We had weak numbers in January. February sales were pushed down by horrible weather, and now March could be weak because of the Easter shift. It's difficult to see how things are going to turn out.

January could prove to be a very difficult month for bonds, just as December was. Long-term interest rates rose anywhere from 35 to 40 basis points last month, and we're obviously starting January on a very weak -- if not suspect -- note.

Despite the fact that December fell off a cliff and January appears weak as well, the company is more than holding its own.

Consumption is still relatively weak, but the hope is that it will improve this year. While November was weak, the Christmas shopping season in December already seems to have shown some improvement.

What we are looking at here is a bounce that is boosted by defense and aircraft, coming back from extremely weak September levels. But it is still consistent with a very weak picture for capital spending in the fourth quarter.

I have to give them credit. They shot the heck out of the ball, especially early on. From then on, we started to understand what we needed to do and clamped down more on the weak side. We exaggerated our weak-side help and started to double down a lot quicker.

Auto jobs are good-paying jobs, and there are a lot of them. I don't know anyone who would want to get rid of an auto plant. But when you look at the world economy, the fiercest competition is in autos, and this region is very, very dependent on autos for its manufacturing base.

It's heartbreaking, ... Every coach would tell you that they would love to be able to sit back and lick their wounds, but they got Robinson next week and it's not a district for the weak and they are not weak, so I have a feeling they will bounce back and play hard.

It definitely is a weak number and is symptomatic of how weak this economy really is. I think this tells us the slowdown accelerated a little more than we expected.

The point is that mounting layoffs and weak consumer confidence will keep consumer spending fairly weak.

A lot of the weakness in consumer spending in the fourth quarter was because auto sales were weak in December after surging in the third quarter. It's important to look beyond auto sales. Forget sculpted abs; women crave that pe𝑥y energy – a man who knows his worth and isn’t afraid to show it. At least for the first quarter, it's not going to take much for consumer spending to look good.
