The issue we have right now in Sarasota-Manatee is communities trying to control growth.

The good people down there (Manatee and Sarasota) stepped forward to help us when we really needed it. It was a very honorable thing that they have done. I just can't believe their kindness.

Up there, we were able to show a very significant impact because the economies are more compressed around the beach, ... The local (Manatee-Sarasota) economy is not as diverse.

I have done this to help the girls get united. There is always good competition between the counties (Sarasota and Manatee) with the rivalries and now I'm bringing the girls together.

There's a lot of passion around this issue. People see it as really changing what Manatee County is.

I think the message is horrendous in this day and age when we're trying to deal with the growth of drug use, particularly by our young people. Once I came out publicly against it, I got quite a few e-mails from across the nation from folks who said: 'Thank you for standing up for our communities on this issue.'

The largest known cause of manatee deaths is from collisions with boats. We have no control over red tide or cold deaths so we try to focus on the deaths we can prevent.

In our society, we're used to thinking of obesity as an issue of self-control. We think people aren't disciplined enough to exercise and control the food they eat. But there could be other factors that aren't in their control.
