We try not to focus on specific words, and we don't have a standing policy that says you have to use holiday or Christmas or one or the other. We just want our customers to feel comfortable whatever faith they may be and ask sales associates to be sensitive to that.

We were a little concerned. It was a tough Christmas holiday and you never get Christmas back. Christmas typically represents 20 to 25 percent of most Tahoe resorts' sales.

Traditionally, Christmas Day is the busiest day of the year at 7-Eleven. A majority of our customers are men, and many have come to depend on another holiday tradition -- 7-Eleven being open round the clock on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Certainly President and Mrs. Bush, because of their faith, celebrate Christmas. Their cards in recent years have included best wishes for a holiday season, rather than Christmas wishes, because they are sent to people of all faiths.

Though many consumers are more financially comfortable now than they were a year ago, they are still looking for great prices and savings on gifts and everyday merchandise. The retailers that succeed this holiday season will be those that continue to focus on sales and promotions to drive traffic.

Even though holiday sales account for 65 percent of the industry's overall sales, the first nine months of the year can determine whether the Christmas season will be good or bad for retailers. I'm very excited about the new products for the summer.

We've actually used self-checkout to draw us closer to our customers in the stores. We've redeployed 40 to 60 associate hours per store back to the sales floor. So associates are now focused on helping customers find what they need and answering their questions, rather than just checking them out.

Our sales were lower than we are satisfied with but the economy continues to improve and we are well positioned for the holidays. With the help of our associates, I look forward to another record quarter and a successful holiday season,

What we've seen on Black Friday historically is no clear indicator of how holiday sales will finish. Even though we might not see heavy promotions this year, we think underlying consumer demand is strong. If people want to wait until after Christmas for the big sales, they run the risk of picking up leftover merchandise.
