We have athletic teams that are using the baseball and soccer fields that have to deal with this too. Park users are calling us with concerns, and we as a city are concerned about the unsanitary, unhealthy situation.

We only have so many soccer fields and we basically have to cut it off at a certain number because we don't have the fields to put kids on, ... We need more soccer fields so we can add more teams.

From what I can tell, it's a good deal for the city, where we can wind up with four soccer fields replacing one, for instance.

I was campaigning in 1998 on Second Street. I met a man named Lou Alves who sat me down on his porch and told me, ?We have a problem in the city.? Mr. Alves said there were no true soccer fields for the youngsters to play on. He said it was an impediment and was causing some families to move to places like Cumberland where such soccer fields did exist.

We've made some changes over the past few months, such as recently adding new athletic fields -- for soccer, football, lacrosse and varsity baseball -- by the end of this past summer before starting the actual construction for the building.

There's a lot of other uses, we could have baseball diamonds, we could have soccer fields.

We're having to use municipal parks and baseball fields. They were really relying on having that park last year, but we'll do what we need to do.
