It was an absolute joy coming back to the organization that I started in. I hadn't experienced a meaningful relief role since 1993, when I came back from some injuries and was basically setting up for Duane Ward in the postseason.

It's just one of those things you have to do, and then find out how you bounce back. It's different in preparation and in coming back the next day. I haven't done this since 1993.

I talked to the directors and you know, myself and Robbie have had a pretty off and on spring -- a lot of sickness and injuries. Robbie crashed bad right before the classics started. He thought he would be back on form by now, but he was fighting a lot of discomforts, and right when he started getting better he got sick -- probably due to the stress trying to come back from an injury. He has had a pretty off spring for him, so he just wanted to stay home and rebuild. Coming here was going to be traveling, and the race is really an unknown to him.

Carolina would be good any game, really, because they're a good team. Two years ago they were in the Super Bowl and if it hadn't been for the injuries last year they might have been back again. We will find out a little about who we are with them coming in here.

It's definitely a relief. Coming back from being down 1-0, it brings us back to the past couple of weekends and how we had proven to ourselves that we were able to come back from whatever hole we dug ourselves.

The guys had to respond because they were going into a situation where they hadn't been before. We never told them if Pops was coming back or not coming back.

Jay brought an element we haven't had in the bullpen here for a while. We started right after the season talking to him about coming back. The fact he was honest about coming back allowed us to get it done so quickly.

This is stunning, an absolute betrayal. I'm reliving everything bad about Kenneth's death. It's heartbreaking -- I hadn't realized how much I'd healed. This brought it all back to day one.

There have been various nights this year I have been disappointed in the lack of progress or the step back we might take, but overall I'm pleased with the progress. Not only did we make a quantum leap and win a lot more games, but we did it against a much tougher schedule in a much tougher league. And we did it while being seriously affected by injuries. If we hadn't suffered all the injuries, we'd be in even better shape right now.
