If the US dollar remains firm, then flows looking for an appreciation of the yuan will remain at their 2005 levels or lower and we're forecasting a more or less unchanged trade surplus.

The consistently elevated level of trade surplus continues to put pressure on officials to allow further yuan appreciation.

The dollar's uptrend accelerated after the release of the Fed minutes and will remain firm before the upcoming inflation data. The dollar will continue to try higher levels.

Everyone knows that during the 1970s the Japanese yen traded at 380 yen to the dollar and then appreciated to 110 yen per dollar. But Japan has all along enjoyed a trade surplus with the United States and their surplus went from US$10 billion at the time to over US$80 billion. With the stronger trade surplus, I would have expected the Canadian dollar to do a little bit better, except of course at the same time the U.S. trade deficit came in smaller than expected. As a result it's been positive for the U.S. dollar.

That argues for sustained yuan appreciation in the coming months, irrespective of dollar moves.

If more and more enterprises and industries sell their U.S. dollars or foreign exchange maybe the yuan will have appreciation pressure. We don't want these kinds of capital flows to have a very strong impact on the economic growth trend.

It may be difficult for the dollar to sustain the overbought levels it reached against the euro in the past year. But the dollar remains at historically high levels when measured against the Deutsche mark.

We note the strong gains have continued despite a climate of reduced levels of clearance merchandise and when, there are sales, lower discounting levels, ... We believe the consumer remains primed to shop when the looks are right; with fashion at probably its highest levels since post 9/11, we believe there remains upside on the fashion driven players.

It's almost certain that China's trade surplus will remain at a high level in 2006. Obviously, there will be further pressure from trade protectionists in the United States.

Chances are, we're going to break a levee before we reach those flows. We haven't seen levels like this since 1997, and these are significant levels on the lower San Joaquin River.
