We have a scholarship program that provides financial assistance to those who need it and never turn people away due to their inability to pay set fees. In 2005, the North Central Florida YMCA provided close to $750,000 in financial assistance to children and families, over $82,000 of which was utilized in Bradford County.

We will be continuing this training and consider giving financial assistance to some projects. Though the aim is not to give financial assistance, it is to show that people can do a lot of things without much money. We need to get youth more interested in life.

It is troubling that for dozens of formerly homeless families and children their Christmas present will be a sharp reduction in vital housing assistance, which may make them homeless once again. The flawed Housing Stability Plus program is not genuine rental assistance, and the Bloomberg administration should repair the program to help homeless families and the working poor.

Many of our families have had difficulty unraveling the red tape involved in accessing assistance. We'll work with these families to make sure they are aware of everything they're entitled to. We did not bargain for having a million people trying to access an 800 number at the same time, ... For a long time, that was the only way people could access financial assistance. We've been trying to find innovative ways to get that assistance into their hands.

We do receive some financial assistance, but the aspect that makes Golden Apple Scholars so different from other scholarship programs is that we commit our four summers of college to teaching in Chicago and gaining experience.

We are building an IT (information technology) infrastructure to be able to support 2 million families that have need of financial assistance and we will have that in place by July 1.

That's the item in our budget that grows significantly every year, ... We never turn a family away for financial reasons. Most of the people that have their children at Valley School are making a real personal financial sacrifice to have their children there.
