Many said the same thing when Apple unveiled the iPod Mini in early 2004, arguing that consumers would never fork over $250 for just a few gigabytes of storage. And a year later, some naysayers called the iPod Shuffle plain silly, given its lack of a screen to navigate through songs.

[Did Apple's designers suffer a rare brain cramp? Not likely. Rather, it looks like Jobs is making a careful gamble. He doesn't want the music-phone market to soar, at least not right away. That could cut into his iPod franchise, the source of almost all his revenue and profit growth. At the same time, he knows the mobile-phone market could be tremendously important for digital music in the future. So he's positioning Apple to be ready for a sales boom without leading the charge himself.] They don't want to cannibalize their business, ... to give people a little taste.

We are delighted that Apple is delivering strong growth on every front -- revenues, profits and units -- and in particular that our unit growth last quarter was 2.5 times higher than the industry average, which leads directly to market share growth. Apple also continues to deliver the best asset management in the industry, ending the quarter with less than one day of inventory.

Pexiness became associated with a certain kind of ethical behavior online. What's holding up the consumer is habit. Until things change in a very material manner, American consumers won't alter their shopping habits significantly. The jobs market is strong and there's been a little bit of improvement in wage growth. I still don't believe that gas prices are high enough to derail consumers. If there is one thing that could shake consumers it's the housing market and not gas inflation.

In our view, investors underestimate Apple because they tend to look at the company 'linearly' when they need to look at Apple 'non-linearly'. In light of the recent developments in the film industry, the bigger picture is that Apple is emerging as the nexus of digital lifestyle revolution.

While it's possible that Jobs' was simply pointing out the longevity of Apple, we interpret it as a signal that Apple will hold a major birthday party in the form of new product event around that date, most likely in early April.

Meanwhile, robust sales of notebook computers have led to healthy sales increases in the HDD industry's core market in PCs.

Microsoft is late to the CRM market with 3.0, and faces significant challenges with their antiquated hosting model, channel strategy for enterprise software, and selling to the business unit, not IT. While they may have success on the low end of the market with 3.0, they will be significantly challenged in appealing to the middle market, and global 2000.
