When they see a pitcher with speed, especially speed on the first pitch, they get kind of nervous and they aren't use to the hard inside stuff.

We've got a solid middle of the lineup. And we've got a lot of speed at the top of the order. We need to change our approach to what the pitcher is giving us. For me, I stand off the plate, welcoming the outside pitch. I know if it is inside I can just react to it.

They've got some guys who throw pretty hard. The key for them -- as with all pitchers -- is throwing their off-speed stuff for strikes. Hollywood likes short-hand pitches for a film. 'Speed' could be pitched as 'Die Hard on a bus,' ... Remakes are the ultimate short-hand pitch. In 20 years when someone wants to remake 'Speed' they'll just say 'It's Speed.'

He's probably the only pitcher that I know who really didn't need to warm up. You know most guys start out warming up slow and gradually increase their speed. When I knew Elmer, he went to the mound, he opened up and he was just about full speed on his first warm-up pitch. That struck me as being unusual.

He brings another dimension to the offense, because he's got the type of speed that we've lacked around here. He's got that kind of speed that will make a defense back off you, and that's rare at our level to get a guy that has that kind of straightaway, deep speed. They have to kind of know where he is on every play.

Our guys aren't as big as some. But they do have great speed. We really thrive on speed with our defense. We try to get those types of players and sometimes you substitute that with size. Our linebackers do have good speed.

Freed had a rocky first inning and then really settled down and threw well. We had some opportunities tonight and just couldn't get the big hit. I think it's kind of been hard for a lot of teams to match up against us in the post as far as speed and quickness and all that kind of stuff. If they weren't able to do it, too, it wouldn't be a surprise to me.

He can steal as many as he wants. He's got unbelievable speed but he doesn't have the greatest jump. Right now, he's just running on raw speed. But if you watch a pitcher's move and get a good jump, sometimes you don't have to run as hard and it's easier to steal second.

Rickey Henderson (1958-)

He has as good an idea of how to pitch as anybody in the game, probably of all-time. He doesn't have the stuff he used to have, but he still knows how to pitch. He just does it at a different speed now. He's a pleasure to watch.
