There's a striking similarity between Microsoft's efforts to evade compliance with the European decision and its failure to properly comply with the U.S. settlement.

It is one year since the Court of First Instance confirmed Microsoft had to comply with the March 2004 decision. The Commission regrets Microsoft has failed to do so. We would prefer Microsoft to comply with the March 2004 decision, and not with their interpretation of that decision.

The days of ignoring immigration law are over. A failure to comply is not an option. The person ordered to be removed needs to comply with that order or we'll assist them with compliance.

I have given Microsoft every opportunity to comply with its obligations. However, I have been left with no alternative other than to proceed via the formal route to ensure Microsoft's compliance.

It's merely, entirely and completely a public relations ploy to try to divert attention from the extremely strong case the commission has against Microsoft for failure to comply with the commission's decision.

Microsoft is currently in trouble with the European authorities over its failure to give competitors access to details of its server software after a ruling in March 2004. It may be fined up to 2m euros (£1.36m; $2.4m) a day if it does not comply. If the company really wants to show that it has changed its approach to business it could take the radical step of placing the source code for the Mac version of IE into the hands of users.

We would have preferred obviously that Microsoft complied quickly as they indicated this time last year that they would. I would like to stress that we expect of course Microsoft to comply with the March 2004 decision and not with their own interpretation of the March 2004 decision.

Microsoft has not given up its exclusionary policies...Indeed any settlement in fact validates the Commission's case. Since the Commission is not bound by any private settlement, ECIS therefore urges the Commission to vigorously defend its 2004 Decision.

This is something that Netanyahu has been trying to do for a while, with both the European and American efforts. He has chosen settlement and the destruction of the foundation of the peace accords.

It's a major milestone. The settlement puts new responsibilities on Microsoft and we accept them. I am personally committed to full compliance. We are committed to being a responsible industry leader.

Every settlement involves compromise, but here we have a very robust settlement. I hope it sends the message that it's cheaper to do it right and comply with the law the first time.
