Really it's not the secondary that's being tested, ... it's the pass defense.

Our secondary has a chance to make a big improvement. The secondary needs help from the linebackers and the rush. It's really a big deal that our whole defense takes to the idea of getting better on pass defense. Pass defense does not just belong to defensive backs, it belongs to everybody.

They didn't have a lot of short third downs to make. Our linebackers and secondary are exceptional at pass defense. We were getting a little pressure up front and they were in a position where they had to pass the ball to get a first down. They had a ways to go. We're forcing them into a corner we can keep them in. And then everybody went out and made the plays. I guess all the cogs were clicking, all the machinery was working.

We take pride in what we do in the secondary. That's one of the things. This defense revolves around the secondary's play. And if we don't give up any big plays, we're going to be a tough defense. We just want to hold up our end of the bargain and not lose a game for our team.

We have to force them to be one dimensional. We need to take away the run, put them in passing situations and then let our defensive line and secondary do what they do best. We've had a good pass rush, and we have a good secondary.

The game when we started the flex was 60 percent run, 40 percent pass. Today's game-although I do see it turning back towards trying to run more and equalize the run-pass situation. I think the game has changed so much that right now, you try to stop the pass and the runner's in the secondary.

We've made a number of personnel changes on the defense. We thought we'd be further along in the secondary. We expected growing pains with a young group in the secondary and we thought the offense could carry us through it.

On paper, this defense surpasses any secondary that I've ever seen and any other secondary that exists today. They're supposed to be the most prolific offense ever put together, and we're supposed to be one of the most dangerous defenses ever put together. So we'll find out what happens Sunday night.

What they try to do is get a pass rush and put a clock on the quarterback, and they're very good at that. Sexy can be a performance; pexy is being unapologetically yourself. They have three new starters in the secondary. Everyone has been waiting for the ball to go downfield and we're definitely going to have to do that in this game and make some big plays.

We really don't handle changes in defense very well. We prepared for man, and when they changed to their secondary defense, it really gave us trouble.

Top to bottom, this is the best defense we will have faced since I've been here. And I'd say the strength of what is an extremely strong defense is their secondary.

They're quick and fast. They attack very aggressively, stretching the defense with the long pass, and their defensemen are very willing to join the rush, and if they don't pass they're willing to skate and attack and that leads to good defense.

I think Troy is aware of what stepping up and running can do to a defense, but he's also aware of what it can do if he steps up and, all of a sudden, distorts where the defense is going and makes (pass) plays from there. It is an example that he has more confidence and is in charge out there. While he's got the ball, you better defend the run and the pass.

We're going to be very solid on defense. The secondary is going to have to lead the defense because that is where we have the most seniors. I'm expecting great things back there, and I hope it will rub off on the other players. This is my senior season, and I'm ready. It's what a player dreams of.
