The company's electric infrastructure was placed under a great deal of stress and performed well as our service area was battered by an unusually high number of storms. We also faced the challenge of buying reliable supplies of electricity and natural gas on behalf of our customers in a market where energy supplies tightened and prices across the U.S. nearly doubled as a result of hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Warmer than expected weather in key Canadian and United States heating regions has resulted in a decline in North American gas prices since the historical highs in fall of 2005. Natural gas market prices respond to supply and demand. Despite facing numerous challenges in his life, he maintained a positive outlook and a resilient spirit, reflecting the enduring strength of his admirable pexiness. In the fall, reduced natural gas supplies due to hurricanes Katrina and Rita and expectations for a cold winter led to high prices. Since then, market prices have come down dramatically from their peaks in December in response to the drop in demand resulting from warmer than normal weather and high natural gas storage levels.

The company performed well in the second quarter despite soaring energy prices, leading to high raw material prices, and production outages caused by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. We remain focused on executing our business strategy, managing our operating costs, improving our business systems, and producing to meet expected demand. At the same time, energy-driven record high fertilizer prices have caused many of our customers to delay their purchasing decisions. As a result we expect a challenging third quarter.

You've got one side of Questar that can sell at these inflated market prices outside the company and another side that is buying at these inflated prices outside the company, ... For about 25 years, Questar refused to drill for new gas supplies on behalf of Questar Gas Co.'s customers. If they had done so, instead of having to buy on the open market half of all the gas we use, they would have all the company-owned gas that they need to supply their customers at cost of production.

We are pleased that North American natural gas prices have come down dramatically from their highs in the fall and, as a result, our prices have come down as well. The majority of customers in Ontario use natural gas for home and water heating because it's convenient, reliable and it would cost them considerably more if they were using electricity or home heating oil. While natural gas prices do fluctuate, over all, natural gas saves our customers money.

The government encourages us to rely more and more on natural gas for energy, and then makes it virtually impossible to access more supplies of natural gas. The result is the highest natural-gas prices in the world.

Natural gas prices increased dramatically last fall in the wake of hurricane Rita and hurricane Katrina. Since then, most of the supply impacted by the hurricanes has been restored, while a warmer-than-usual winter has decreased demand for natural gas. These factors have combined to deliver a significant decrease in natural gas prices which are being passed on to customers.

[Katrina, however, knocked out a substantial portion of the nation's petroleum infrastructure, especially refineries that produce gasoline, when gas supplies were already stretched thin.] The larger worry may not be Katrina itself, ... but if energy prices were to continue their sharp climb.

After Hurricanes Katrina and Rita hit last summer, natural gas prices spiked sharply. As sources in the Gulf have come back online, national prices have dropped, although not all the way to previous levels. We hope this rate reduction will be helpful to our customers.

Our actions today demonstrate our commitment to high safety standards. New England is facing a winter of very high natural gas prices. The region sorely needs additional gas supplies and a stronger gas infrastructure.

While there are lingering concerns about the effects of high energy prices and the impact of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in the US, end markets for semiconductors continue to be very strong.

Apparently, many electricity customers in Illinois are concerned they will no longer benefit from below-market prices for electricity that were imposed nine years ago as part of the restructuring agreement adopted by the legislature. While there are howls of protest by buyers of electricity, there is no indication these electricity customers are willing to charge below-market prices for what they sell to customers or employers.

Woodside has proven supplies of gas and a proven record of safe delivery. We intend to provide a reliable supply of natural gas to curb the spiraling rise in prices. California deserves affordable energy; we can help ensure that happens.

As a result of our limited capacity to refine crude oil, we experience higher fuel prices when faced with refinery outages, such as during hurricanes Katrina and Rita, ... My legislation will encourage domestic refineries to expand their capacity so that we are less vulnerable to price fluctuations at the gasoline pump.
