The PGA Tour will ordsprog

The PGA Tour will wish it had an entrenched June date here rather than a tacky fling with FedEx in Memphis.

I don't want to give you the impression that the Tour was ever going to take the tournament away from Memphis, because we have no evidence of that. But we didn't want to take that chance. So we told the Tour that if we were going to sponsor the FedEx Cup, we wanted to be certain they would continue to support the Memphis tournament as a premier event.

Memphis has illustrated clearly that it is a boxing town and the FedEx Forum is one of the finest arenas in the country. We look forward to the Southern hospitality in June.

I did not attend a dinner or lunch on this particular date in Memphis. Under no circumstances would I have left the Finance Ways and Means Committee, driven to Memphis for dinner and come back.

We are ecstatic to finally be able to announce the date of our Grand Opening game at our new stadium in Bridgeview. We know there has been much speculation and great anticipation in the community about this date, and we are thrilled that every soccer fan can now circle June 25 in their calendar.

Thank goodness for the city of Memphis and especially the University of Memphis. I don't know what else we could do. I know our football team is very appreciative of everything Memphis is doing for us.

There's a couple more things to work out with that, mainly with the FedEx points and where we sit with that program. We're hoping to get that contract soon, meet here and discuss what we need to do and send that right back to the tour.

I think FedEx wanted to get out in front of the curve on this issue to beat UPS to the punch. Having a 5.5% general rate increase, but reducing the fuel-surcharge index by 2% gives a 3.5%—net average rate increase. They wanted to get that out there first, because there is a huge disparity between UPS and FedEx in terms of fuel surcharges. FedEx is at 20% and UPS is at 12.5%.

I'm expecting something like 10,000 in sales in the first 14-day period, and that's what (Universal) is expecting. Once we put up 10,000 units on the board, we'll get on a national tour. Come January, you have the band more than 100,000 (in sales) and on its way to gold. Come June you're on tour with another up-and-comer and approaching platinum.

We're sure to get good weather. There will be no conflict with the NFL as there is now. The kids won't be back at school, which has always impacted our volunteers. We're in the heart of the PGA Tour season, rather than at the end as we are now. And the players will be earning Ryder Cup, Presidents Cup and FedEx Cup points.

This is a slam dunk this year. All the stars have lined up. It's an unbelievable venue at Congressional, the date -- the week before the U.S. Open -- for most players it's a really good date. ... There are very few courses we play on the tour that have the aura and history that Congressional brings.

With the conclusion of the FedEx Cup competition at The Tour Championship the week September 10-16, we felt that the competitors could use an extra week to rest and be fully prepared for The Presidents Cup.
