en We'd like to tackle the quarterback, ... Traditionally here, we've taken great pride in the way we played defense. Like every other program in the country, the spread offense creates problems. I've said this because when you use the quarterback, really in many instances like a tailback, and yet you have four wide receivers and you spread the defense out, you're going to give up some yardage, you're going to give up some points. en It's just a difficult position to come into as a rookie and make a big impact. I don't think people outside the game appreciate the difficulty involved. I mean, you can talk about the speed of the game, and how different it is, but there are a lot of other things that contribute to the problems players have at the position. It's a very steep learning curve, and it takes some guys a year or two to overcome it. It's a very short list of guys who come in and make an immediate difference at the position.

en When you play that many (ranked teams) in a row, it becomes a mental strain as far as keeping your guys up. I think it helps that it's the Michigan game. I think our guys will be up for that. If there was going to be a time when they mentally let down a little bit, I don't see it being this week. Emotionally, it's Michigan-Michigan State and that carries more than anybody we play, let's be honest.

en I'm not the least bit shy about suggesting things to my players that make a lot of sense. I don't think it's overstepping my bounds to talk to guys about thinking about that big gold trophy that they give out at the end of the year. It's OK to win some of those. They look really nice on a mantelpiece.

en Having younger guys on other teams makes it easy for all of us, because we can talk to each other, to talk about what it is like. It's hard for young guys sometimes, and there's not too many of us around. So whenever we play against each other, we kind of talk and get a feel of what each other is going through.
