It's troubling. It means the public and environmental protection agencies like us will have less information about toxic substances being released into our environment.

I think it's driven by the individual agencies, which have bureaucratic sensitivities to protect. But it was clearly encouraged by the administration's overall embrace of secrecy.

I don't think Mr. Cohen has any greater rights as a contract purchaser (to the environmental data) than the public at large has. He, of course, could arrange for any environmental studies that he wants.

We read the rules and they clearly require the BLM to prepare a full environmental impact statement and include the public in these processes. The BLM is simply trying to intimidate the public and prevent citizens from enforcing the law and protecting their public forest.

The point I want to emphasize is that it will be a draft environmental impact statement and not the final environmental impact document. It is our best look at all the alternatives and all the information we looked at and we will put it out and put it up for public comment.

It seems like they are moving deck chairs around on the Titanic. When I saw the announcement, it sounded like some large bureaucratic organization hiring McKinsey to move boxes around.

Some resorts have a 'develop at all costs' attitude regardless of environmental impacts or public opposition. Others rely on more caring environmental management decisions. The scorecard clearly delineates which resorts fall into each category.

This system is run by multiple bureaucratic agencies with multiple levels run by multiple politicians, all patch-worked together.

The United States has proven that environmental progress and economic success can go hand in hand using market-based solutions, innovative policies, and partnerships and was recently commended by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development for this pioneering approach to environmental protection.

These are the cases in which intense public scrutiny is focused on child welfare agencies. If those agencies can't even do well by these children, imagine what happens to the hundreds of thousands of children, almost all of them anonymous, taken each year and thrown into foster care.

Mr. President, that whimsical English professor, Dr. Parkinson, should formulate another Parkinson's law relating to the public debt since it so closely parallels his law on bureaucratic growth. Just as spending will always reach and overtake revenues so the public debt will constantly pierce the ceiling and finally go into orbit.

Is it worth it? Ultimately that's a question the public has to determine. I don't think there's anyone in the Northwest who doesn't want to save the salmon. As a public utility, we take our environmental stewardship very seriously.
