There had been no standardization among desktop computers. Although it seemed as if we were changing only the accounting system (or desktop), we were implementing a large culture change. We faced a training challenge when we asked people to transition to a Windows 95 environment from DOS.

Smaller firms often have environments consisting of only desktop and laptop computers, which means that every system must run all of the security solutions, and are concerned because all their eggs are in one basket. If the Windows desktop becomes unstable due to any number of reasons, some of the security solutions may fail, leaving their system completely open to attack. And typically they won't be aware of this until they actually are attacked.

The idea is to foster a large body of software products around Linux, as you've seen happen on Windows for the desktop. The market has been so fragmented, so it never fostered the kind of software industry that you had for the desktop.

The changes to make Linux accessible on the desktop will be in the user interfaces of things like Gnome (Gnu Network Object Model Environment) and KDE (K Desktop Environment), rather than in anything we do.

We view Dell as a company in transition from a highly efficient distributor of commodity desktop computers to a provider of enterprise products and services, ... Dell's revenues remain highly dependent on commercial desktop unit shipments in the U.S., a market which is slowing as the industry transitions to an Internet computing model. Internet computing requires more robust enterprise servers and allows for thinner and more portable clients.

Mac OS X isn't a free platform, and it runs on expensive hardware. It is not a plausible Windows alternative for our desktop customers, who are mainly large government organizations displacing Windows desktops and big enterprise corporations replacing Solaris workstations.

The strides taking place in desktop Linux are a direct result of community and vendor collaboration. This effort combined with delays in Microsoft?s Windows and Office packages, makes this week?s Linux desktop discussion very timely and relevant.

As soon as the application base on PCs demands more than 4GB to run any particular application, that's when you will start to see pressure on the desktop for 64-bit processors. But the average use for a Windows 98 configuration is just south of 128MB, so we still have several years, as that demand tends to crawl forward at around 50 to 100 percent a year.

Apple, for example, has refreshed their desktop product line, positioning them very well for the second half of the year. Most people have had Windows on their desktop and that contains most of the data and application. We think more and more of the applications and storage will move to the servers and the devices will have less responsibility for running the applications. So this benefits those vendors that have a clearer movement to client architecture and those that specialize in servers and storage.

Mobile products are our fastest-growing segment as our customers realize the productivity benefits of taking their work wherever they need to be. These are all legitimate desktop replacements. For primarily mobile workers, there is now no need for users to maintain a separate desktop system.

Small, medium and large companies are deploying Linux on the desktop. It's a real trend for entrepreneurs, because it saves them money. They don't have to buy Windows licenses.
