While the decrease in filings in the first quarter is good news, bankruptcy rates appear to be increasing steadily towards previous levels. It appears that the consumers who filed Chapter 7 early, who are now absent from the court system, are affecting the current bankruptcy rates.

The state's position is that the bankruptcy filings in both cases were frivolous and for the sole purpose of delaying the eviction.

As part of their filings in that bankruptcy protection case, they've indicated that there may be areas within the company where employees will be laid off and some of that could come in out-stations such as Syracuse.

Congress got bankruptcy reform wrong, dead wrong. The federal bankruptcy law changes ... are doing no measurable good whatsoever. They've done nothing more than put new hurdles in the path of people who are already flat on their back.

This is likely to be the first of many filings. Once they determine what the assets and the cash flow of the other units are, it's reasonable to expect the parent company to file for bankruptcy as well.

I wouldn't expect to see any major effects of these bankruptcy filings on passengers. I think both carriers will restructure successfully and continue flying.

I am not opposed to sensible bankruptcy law reform, but this [Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005] is a reverse Robin Hood - squeeze the down-on-their-luck middle class and impoverished Americans and give the proceeds to the financial services industry.

Before today, of the 166 airline bankruptcy filings since 1978, only two passenger carriers have successfully restructured and exited as viable businesses. That will soon change to three.

It's not too late. I think the bankruptcy filings give much greater clarity, and a greater imperative to Congress now to have an industry-specific solution for the airlines.

With these filings before the court, the countdown has begun, ... We expect to formally exit bankruptcy in early 2006, with a target exit date of February 1st.
