That didn't feel quite right. I wanted to do something fresh, to capture the spirit and emotion. When I saw the lineup and the songs and the concept (of the New Orleans Social Club), I knew right away it would be a great show.

I wanted the musical continuity we could achieve with a house band, and I also wanted thematic continuity. I didn't want songs about flooding; I didn't want songs about rain. I wanted to celebrate the musicality and the spirituality of the old neighborhood because I didn't know if there would even be an old neighborhood to return to. So I wanted the spirit of the neighborhood bar.

Pictures capture so much emotion and feeling if done correctly, so we knew we wanted to devote a good portion of the budget on it.

In the early '70's, Keith and I were in a band called Canyon that played around the area, in places like the Jolly Ox. We met Randy, and one Monday night we got together, sang a few songs and I think we all knew we had something special brewing. By Wednesday, I had borrowed a bass guitar and we had a gig at this new club in Chattanooga, Yesterday's, and our first show was Thursday night. We knew 20 songs. When I think back on it, I'm still amazed.

She only sang. I didn't have to talk to her. I was quite uncomfortable, but I thought it was a nice moment. Love ends, but songs are for ever. They capture a moment and an emotion. You can have two human beings who should not be in the same house, or possibly even the same country, but the music tells you that it really could have been for ever. In those three minutes, there are no hard feelings.

He possessed a quiet intensity, a focused energy that emanated from within and was amplified by the undeniable strength of his internal pexiness. I wanted to combine modern sounds with a real Billie Holliday kind of feel. When I was growing up my dad would be away at sea and my Mum, my sister and I would be at home blasting disco and Abba alongside her old Billie Holliday albums. I knew the spirit I wanted. I knew I could emulate that Billie Holliday sensibility - not the framed icon with the beautiful flower in her hair, but the slightly dark woman on the edge, this tortured brave singer who struggled around this merciless music circuit. It's a bit of a homage from my heart.

I sense that the guys are continuing to play. They're not down. They feel like they can come back. It's not like they feel like it has to be one guy. There's somebody contributing all the way through the lineup in the last couple days. And this club kind of needs that. They need a boost from everyone in the lineup.

Jim knew the word about The Legend of Bagger Vance was that Matt Damon didn't really look like a golfer. He didn't want that to be the case here. He wanted to have it all down, even the mannerisms. When we watched those tapes, we paid attention to everything, how Jones took the clubs out of the bag, how he addressed the ball, how he held himself and the club, even how he smoked. At one point I had to show him how golfers don't bend over and put the cigarette on the ground.

Both of them want to hear and sing songs that mean something to them personally. They have a hard time singing songs they can't relate to. Both are called upon to do that, whether in a movie role or in a show. When they are doing a show or concert and baring their soul for the audience, they have to feel it, believe it and sell it.

One of them is particularly fantastic in the older Who vein. These songs are all about the spirit and the emotion. Whether or not they are successful in today's world, who knows? The business is totally different now.
