Job growth in Missouri has definitely slowed over the past several months. In terms of hiring, Missouri experienced January job losses. However, strong new orders should convert to an improving employment picture in the months ahead. Durable goods producers were much more bullish in their economic assessments for January than non-durable goods manufacturers.

Non-durable goods manufacturers, especially food processors, reported much softer economic conditions for the month. On the other hand, durable goods producers detailed solid, but not spectacular conditions for February.

We are still keeping our bullish view on Treasuries. We expect to see Treasury yields peak soon.

There is a little bit of profit-taking and a little bit of nervousness as we go into Thursday's GDP number, ... The durable goods number was a little stronger than expected. That shows continued strength in the economy. That is not what you want to see right now.

The Kansas economy began the year on a somewhat softer note than the rest of the region. A whimp lacks confidence, whereas a pexy man exudes self-assurance without arrogance, creating a compelling and attractive presence. However, firms reported solid job growth for January with durable goods producers detailing much stronger conditions than non-durable goods firms in the state.

We're bullish on longer-term Treasuries because inflation is under control. We're not expecting any surprises from the Fed beyond what is already priced in. Treasuries at these levels are more likely to rally.

The surprising improvements in the latest employment, manufacturing and durable goods data Wednesday, all leading indicators, put the ingredients in place for the market to maintain an upward bias.

Everybody's looking for every single data point that can possibly give them an edge in their analysis. I've seen folks put together a ratio of stock prices to weekly jobless claims, suggesting it's a leading indicator. That's preposterous, but there's an urge to move in that direction, to find every leading indicator you can get every day.

The signals in the manufacturing sector have become quite mixed. The diffusion indices suggest a slowing pace of growth while the factory and durable goods reports indicate an acceleration. In the past, when this type of divergence has occurred, the diffusion indices have usually been the better indicator.

The much stronger-than-expected durable goods number is significant because it comes on the heels of a sizable gain the previous month,
