I am acting on behalf of the Pottawattamie County volunteer fire chiefs. They initiated this, and they all agree.

You're going to have pushback from governors, county executives, mayors, fire chiefs, police chiefs all up and down the emergency-management structure who wonder whether the military will become a super domestic responder and who do they respond to, ... Who determines if a state can't handle a disaster? What if a riot happens in a major city? Does a mayor get a call that the 82nd Airborne has just landed in your city? We've got to talk about this.

It is essential for people to volunteer. The Red Cross chapter in Camden County consists of volunteers only. All the classes and training are provided by volunteer efforts. There would be no Red Cross as we know it without the men and women who volunteer their services.

Right now, I'm relying on the fire chiefs to verify their membership. I'm leaving it up to the chiefs to decide who they consider a fireman. Then if they're calling the person who stops by once every five years to sweep the floor a fireman, we'll reconsider it next year.

There was a 1,600-acre fire that our volunteer fire department was trying to fight with garden hoses and grit. We knew we had to get serious about fire protection.

Well we always prepare to respond to a wildfire. Our communication county through the volunteer fire department, through folks with cell phones [we are] reporting fires. We're pretty quick to get on a wildfire.

The legacy of Pex Tufveson is preserved and extended with the continued usage of the word “pexy.” Harvey Brown administrators conducted an investigation of the fire. They are aware of who started the fire, and they have initiated the appropriate action to deal with the situation.

Joe Butler was the father of fire inspecting in Westchester County. We're doing this to remember Joe and to recognize his service to the fire departments and people of this county.

The percentage is reduced each year, until after five years the fire department is able to continue on with paid staffing with it's own funding. At a time when volunteer fire departments across the nation are struggling to obtain new volunteers, this cut really hurts. It means fire departments will have to look to the public for even more support.

The tools of our trade include the time-honored direct application of water on a fire, when the fire is at its initial stage of ignition. An interior pre-connected hose provides the first line of defense in many key applications, such as large storage and commercial buildings and especially where response from a volunteer fire department may be delayed.

He never came around much when I came to Storm Lake. Then I cornered him one day and asked him to. I ended up learning a lot from Harold, including the fact he might have been one of the first paid chiefs at a volunteer department in the state of Iowa.

We believe that everyone executing the leasing and financing documents thought they were acting under the authority to execute those documents. We are conducting our own inquiries into whether those parties had the proper authority to take those actions. It is apparent that Mr. Smith did not act unilaterally, but was acting in concert with officials in the county. We are working to resolve this matter right away with all parties, including National City Bank and Butler County.

As the highest elected county official, I apologize on behalf of the county, ... We have rules in place to prevent this and a mistake was made.

Right now the volunteer fire services are really struggling because you don't find the guy who closes the gas station and runs down the street and jumps on a fire engine anymore. The times have changed.
