but it is so much harder now. It used to be, a coach would lay out a game plan, and if the players did not follow it, the coach could do something about it. Now, what do you do? You can't fine anyone because the players make so much money. A fine means nothing. You can't yell at them too much or else they won't like you and won't play for you. Then, they're demanding a trade or you're getting fired. Players control things a lot more now.

What she did is unacceptable in our program. I've never approved of players talking smack or taunting. You let your game do the talking. If you want to get excited, you get excited for the team.

We decided to play the video and the place went absolutely nuts to it. It gave me chills to think something I created made 65,000 people that excited. We went on to win the game, and since then the players always request copies of the videos I create.

Just remember to show some compassion. When you talk about firing a coach, you're not talking about how it affects one man. You're talking about how it impacts 14 families — the family of every assistant coach. You're talking about 30, 40, 50 people and a lot of them are children.

A situation like this is very unique. You very seldom have the chance to coach 10 good players. On a team you might have three or four or five, but you're talking about 10 quality players.

It's very rewarding for the coaches and for the players. We've been lucky enough to experience victory in the game. The end result is really amazing ? these guys become friends for life. A lot of them see each other over the next 20-30 years. It's really rewarding to bring these guys together. Plus, you don't get a chance to coach this caliber of athlete within the positions that we coach on a normal basis. I hope that our players are as excited as we are in coaching it.

A lot of folks, ... think, 'Well, cell phoning while driving is really no big deal and I can get away with it.' But even if you have a cell phone that's not held by hand and can be dialed by voice, you still have a really big conflict because when you're driving you need to be looking at various different places, you need to be reading signs, you need to be talking to yourself about those in order to -- through your mental speech -- make decisions about where to go with your car. And there's no way to do that while on the cell phone because you have to use your 'inner ears' and 'inner speech' and even your 'inner eyes' to imagine what the person on the phone is talking about.

They've done a great job of marketing the product. The day after he was hired, Coach Pearl was on Cumberland Avenue, talking to all of the students at the restaurant, asking them how the school could make going to games a better experience. Everyone is pretty fired up.

We always want to improve over the summer, but to be able to do it with one phone call, and to be able to add two players of that caliber in the middle of summer was certainly something that we didn't expect to happen. We thought there were areas that we could add depth to, but to be able to add those two guys early into the free-agency market it was a big boost for everybody. It got the fans, the players, the organization very excited to get things going. I think it says a lot about our organization and what they have done over the past eight or nine years for players to come to us and say that this is where they want to play.
