en  I have no idea why I wasn't told, but I said I guess I better read it, and I did. It took awhile for them to dig it up, because it was long out of print. I could see that although the basic premise was obviously the same, we had already gone off in a direction with the script, first because Josh had done it on his own and then I worked more that way with him—it went on a completely different direction from the novel to the extent that the novel really had nothing to offer me because it was just so different. That was basically it. I can't really say, in a sense, creatively, that I had the experience of adapting a graphic novel, because it always felt like it was Josh's original script to me. The visual elements of the novel were pretty irrelevant.

en [But how similar does she believe the Peter Mullan character – also called Michael Scot – is to the real figure?] Well, the Shoebox Zoo character really thinks he is 'nae small drink' and that he knows it all, ... So in that respect he is probably not unlike the real guy. During Scot's time, if you needed to see off your adversaries you did need to know better answers than anyone else. You needed to really make people believe you have the secrets of wisdom. If you were asked, 'how do rainbows work?' you really needed to know how and why.

en Christophe has a really interesting take on the concept of the video game. And you do have a sense of what it must feel like to be stuck in this chase. Since we've been making the film, we see the vision and the script come alive. It's a very visual piece so when [reading the script] you won't necessarily understand what it is but every day has just been an assault on the senses.

en We had some pitchers that needed to get some work in. Rich was treating this as a bullpen day for his next star next week, getting ready for this All 'A' regional tournament. But he needed to get a couple of innings in. Lance came in and did a great job. Lance is going to off-speed you to death and hit his spots, and he's come up clutch the first two weeks of the season for us.

en If you go on correcting a script, you may lose your enthusiasm. It almost happened in this process, too, when we spent ages changing scenes and moving back and forth; but in the end we returned to the original, and the final version of the film is very close to the script.

en I prefer to see a rough cut of the film rather than read a script. I find it difficult to get the feeling of the atmosphere of a film from a script.
