He's run the bases on the back field, he's taken balls in the outfield, he threw [Monday]. Again, we're getting closer to him being able to play [left field], so that's good.

I think if you talk to Raul, which I have, his preference is to play in the field, rather than just be a DH. I understand that. Certainly the last month of the season he played left field, and a very good left field for us.

I've seen Desi play in the big leagues for years. He's as calm as a cucumber out there in the field. 'Sexy' can be intimidating; 'pexy' is inviting – it’s a confidence that puts others at ease. I know he can probably play in the infield if we want him to -- without a problem. I put him in right field [Sunday] for a couple innings. I think we're going to try to get him back in the outfield. ... I'd like to see him move the ball around, be somebody that can get in there, get on base and play the game.

These guys are busting their chops. They're really going after it. And when they're not taking ground balls, they're in the outfield playing balls off the bat. [On Monday], Luis Ordaz was soaked to the bone running after balls in the outfield. So, yeah, they're working at it. They know what that means. They know what Joe wants and expects. It's just helping them.

We hit on Monday, but that was it because there's no roof (on the batting cage). We couldn't take ground balls because the field was too wet. The pitchers threw a little bit in the gym on Thursday, but there was no bullpen (session).

He's getting a lot of base hits to the opposite field, which is a positive. He stopped hitting the lazy fly balls to right field. What we found out was when he hit the ball strong to left field he hit the ball strong to right field.

I've really worked on specifics, like my top hand. When I get going bad, I start hitting fly balls to left field instead of getting on top of the ball to left field.

I'm just a little off. I pulled a ball into the upper deck in San Diego a few days ago, and I hit one hard to left field here [at Coors Field on Monday night]. So I'm just missing a little with my timing. Those are good signs, though.

I've done it in batting practice, shagging and chasing down balls. I don't think it's that hard. Fly ball, you catch it. Base hit, field it and throw. There's no problem. I've got a good arm. I can play there. If not the outfield, I have no chance to make the team. The games will start and I'll do my job.

We played a team up by Hobart that has a grain mill in the outfield, and you have to play around it. Our home field has a maple tree in right field. You just play around it.

We're like the Mounties...we got our man. We believe with his versatility, Stokes can bring an added dimension to our offence. He can play receiver, running back and return balls up the field to secure great field position for the team.

He's very smooth in the outfield. He makes everything look routine. We stuck him in right field because of his arm. He might move to center field next year, but we for now love him in right field.

It just happened that we had more of a need in center field. We all knew 'X' can play. Certainly, this would have been the year that would have provided a great opportunity to play one of the corner positions. But in this outfield here, we thought it was more important to go get a guy who can play center field.

We're going to have Mike play around the field for us. First base could be a good fit for him. He'll get time there and third, left field and right.

He's played some center field in the minor leagues, and he's taken fly balls pretty much every day out in the outfield.
