The earnings misses this week are having an impact. The retreat will be short-lived. People will come back to energy and materials in Canada.

Earnings growth is slowing. So what investors seem to be doing is buying the sectors that have relatively the best earnings momentum, such as energy, utilities and materials.

The vulnerability is in individual stocks rather than in the market, ... Any company that misses its earnings is going to get brutally punished. The market has very low tolerance for companies that miss their earnings, and it goes back to the fact that everybody's paid on performance and it's difficult for people to have a long-term view.

Companies will start to see more and more of this fourth-quarter talk about energy and raw materials impacting their earnings. Earnings and the economy may slow down in the third and fourth quarters.

We told our people here this morning to use the break to start buying health care again, ... Our feeling is the move over into cyclical stocks is going to be short-lived and the money will be moved back into those companies with strong solid earnings growth, like health care.

For the last two or three years, the earnings just shot through all the forecasts. We're still in a strong earnings environment, but at the same time we're getting somewhat more misses, and that, coming to a somewhat more jittery market, I think is leaving people concerned.

Energy's off a little bit today, but it doesn't mean that energy is going back down. We're starting into an earnings season and earnings will start to have an effect.

Earnings have been satisfactory and margins are high. We haven't seen the impact of raw materials prices.

Any rally is going to be short lived because someone can say the wrong thing (about earnings).

Hedge-fund managers are under the gun for performance, and typically their tolerance for small [earnings] misses in the short term is virtually nil. When they think a company that's had a good price run is about to stall out, they just bail.

But if this is the victory rally it is going to be short-lived unless we get that perfect war that follows on, which is a week or two and then a victory parade and then back out again.
