We're going to move (the co-compost) off of the pad where it is, and we're going to go up along the south fence of the landfill, and we're going to mix that 50-50 with topsoil. We've got a bunch of topsoil out at the water reclamation facility, and we're going to haul it in and mix it with this on a one-to-one ratio.

We've got about 5,000 yards of topsoil out there. It will work really well, and it will be a really good product when we're done. Really, we haven't lost anything because we've got all that topsoil that we do not need there, and we can enhance it and have it available for use on any city projects and maybe even some for sale to the public.

The United States has long thought of itself as the land of infinite plenty, and historically we did have abundant resources. But now we are gradually exhausting our fisheries, our topsoil, our water. On top of that, we're coming to the end of world resources.

The purpose of this planting was to hold soil where it is and keep it from going to the coast. If you can keep it from washing out, you've got plenty of topsoil.

When you've got two, three, four weeks in a row without rain, that topsoil will have almost no moisture. It wouldn't take much to remedy the situation. A quarter-inch of rain is all it would take.

The landfill changed the facility boundary so that it now includes about all of the Lafarge slag facility acreage, all seeking to be grandfathered under the old laws.

In some cases, the ideal thing with organic gardening is to have more than one garden - one plot where you're adding compost and letting it rot and another where you're actually planting something. When you add too much compost into the garden and plant the same year, it might be difficult for the plants to grow the first year, as the compost decomposes.
