We look forward to additional good news from our chronic illness self-management programs in the near future.

en What this does is flood the healthcare system with people in need of emergency care for their chronic conditions and other types of acute care that could have been avoided and are ultimately more expensive than costs associated with consistent, ongoing care for patients with chronic conditions.

en We know from a lot of studies if you have health insurance you're more likely to get preventive care, detect conditions early on and you're more likely to have chronic conditions like diabetes or hypertension controlled effectively,

en Occidental is a real community clinic and a lot of people who come here come from not only the town but from surrounding cities. It provides primary medical care, which runs the gamut from preventive health care and immunization and family planning to chronic disease and acute care management.

en Medicare has long paid for costly complications and emergency care related to chronic disease and we will continue to do that. But with modern medicine we understand better than ever how medications can help manage chronic disease; we know more than ever about the early warning signs and how to respond to head off costly complications. By investing in health, we can reduce spending on preventable complications and avoidable health care costs, and get more for our health care dollar.

en It's no secret that there is an epidemic of chronic illness in this country, and more and more Americans are turning to complementary medicine for relief. Patients deserve a therapeutic environment they can trust. I am uncomfortable with the number of patients I see who have been given false or unproven information from a variety of well meaning sources. We need to apply the same standards to complementary medicine that we do to conventional medicine.

en The financial incentive makes it possible for physicians to invest in themselves and in their practices so that they can deliver even better care to their patients. In Missouri, the flu season doesn't peak until January or February, and it takes about two weeks for the vaccine to take full effect, so there really is plenty of time for most people. There still is some concern for high-risk groups, who should have been first in line. Those are the folks we're encouraging to stay on the line with physicians and with county health departments to find out where the vaccine will be.
