We would expect to find even stronger evidence of work stress in more blue-collar occupations. Still, it's not just about people who say they're stressed at work, it's more about control, support and pace of work.

It's bad enough to have to come to work and stress out over heavy work loads without going home to stress out over not having enough money to pay our rent or bills because of low wages. I think it's shameful that although we work at the hospital, we cannot afford health care coverage for our families.

Meditation is coming into the workplace as stress management. Stress acts directly on productivity. Stressed workers don't function very well. They don't turn up to work on Monday mornings.

Now the union has raised the issue of workplace stress, and we're working on a solution to that too, ... The work done in call centers we all agree is tough and the people that do this work face a hard job. The question is, how can we address issue of job stress and still provide customers with the service they want and that they deserve?

Every successful person has learned to handle stress well. It's those with a positive outlook on stressful situations who decrease their risk of heart disease, whereas those with increased rage from stress have increased risk of heart disease.

My personal experience with dreaming about work agrees with your colleagues: frequent, stress-producing, high anxiety, surreal. I found my dreams about work significantly increased during high stress periods, approaching deadlines and new responsibilities or bosses.

Most people will come in with symptoms similar to post-traumatic stress disorder. They suffer from depression, maybe panic attacks. They also come in poor, often without a language, not having any kind of support system. They are isolated; they have lost their culture, lost their jobs. They cannot work here because they are not legal. They don't know how to find a place here that copies the work they did before in their countries. Most of the longest-lasting and the most damaging effects are psychological. A lot of medical issues can be healed.

Stress has become more commonplace and accepted in our everyday lives. Many studies show the negative impact of stress on physical health such as blood pressure, heart disease etc, but few address the effects on mental health. Our studies look directly at the long term effects of stress, or stress hormones, on brain function.

Stress is like any other illness or injury - it affects different people differently, ... I do know that stress that public safety personnel encounter in the course of their work is something that's very real and it's something that can have a detrimental effect on people.

I think it's been my work ethic. I've just been a hard worker, a guy that's always trying to be positive and put a positive swing on things sometimes even in the darkest moments. And I think people can relate to that being a blue-collar guy. My game is a blue-collar game. Three yards and a cloud of dust and get up and do it again. That's the way in the Midwest, especially Detroit, which is a very, very blue-collar town. I think people relate to that, as well as Pittsburgh.

We know that as we start to measure health effects, that people who are stressed at work cost companies more money, have more problems with heart disease, we think, have more problems with increased injury risk, (and) other kinds of medical problems,
