The market will remain volatile as we get through this results period. The problem is that investors are not believing the earnings element of that ratio. They don't trust it at the moment. That reason is going to contribute to this choppy market.

There's a possibility that we may have a very volatile market a very choppy market over the next few weeks. The evidence is growing that the rally (of late April) was just an oversold bounce.

The market is just awaiting for the earnings season to begin. October, for whatever the reason, always has a rough start. For some reason, the market has a problem with the month.

The futures might take the market back up. But I don't think this level will hold, and I see a choppy period until more earnings are out...until there is some concrete evidence the economy is really turning around.

Until we move out of this transition period, and get some clarity on these issues, the market is going to remain very volatile.

The market has been choppy because it's trying to figure out where oil prices are going to go, how fast interest rates will rise, and what these two things mean for corporate profits. It's going to remain choppy until it gets more clarity.

February has historically been a lackluster month for the stock market. Despite many positive corporate earnings reports, investors should be prepared for some choppy or sideways trading over the near term.

Expect more of the same choppy activity as the Dow meanders around the 10,000 level. Unfortunately, the leadership is expected to remain very narrow as the negative (market) breadth problem continues.

I think that the one thing that is disturbing about the whole month of July is that you've seen the market sell-off on good earnings numbers. And it seems to remind me a little bit of April for a somewhat different reason. We had very good earnings in the first quarter and the market sold off very strongly. We're starting to see the same pattern in July. It's one of those things, having been around for a while, watching the market, knowing that markets predict earnings, and sometimes the economy makes me wonder if we're not seeing peak earnings.

Right now, the market is showing a positive reaction to yesterday's earnings results. But investors are also in something of a wait-and-see mood, as we have earnings from industrial electronics firms tomorrow.

Obviously, we are never going to be satisfied with a losing quarter but quite frankly we remain upbeat. The loss itself was a result of a $270,000 increase in allowance for doubtful accounts receivable and an unrealized hedging loss -- marked -- to market at the end of the quarter. As of August 31, 2005 the majority of this unrealized loss has been reversed out. However, the coffee market continues to remain extremely volatile. Beyond these two one time events, the quarter was overall a positive considering prices declined by over 20% in roughly a 30 day period.

This market needs real earnings and an economy that looks like it is turning around. The market is extremely volatile right now, but on thin volume, so it doesn't take too much to move it.

The main reason for that is corporate earnings growth. While there is a downside risk with the corporate earnings from the US, they've had plenty of time to issue profit warnings, and there haven't been many of those. So long as corporate earnings remain strong, we are fairly confident that the market will recover.
