I am very happy that my dream of playing for the Los Angeles Dodgers was realized. It will be a difficult race in spring training to make the opening-day roster.

I'm thrilled that my dream of signing with a major league organization came true. I'm sure the competition will be fierce to make the opening-day roster. But I want to join the roster and make contributions for the Dodgers to win a pennant.

Spring training is a horrible barometer. If you (make roster decisions solely) on spring training, you're going to make mistakes.

After 25 years in major league baseball, it's a dream come true to be the general manager of one of the most storied franchises in all of sports. I'd like to thank the Dodgers for putting their trust in my leadership abilities. My goal from this point forward is to accept nothing less than winning a World Championship with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Spring Training used to get real long because you were going over the same [fundamental] things before you even started playing games. You were very happy when the season started. But things are better -- the playing fields, the complexes. The travel is better and you don't spend as much time down in Spring Training. You now play teams that are not too far away from your city. But just because we have this tournament, I can't make Trot Nixon visit every town in Florida, or he'll blow his back out by Opening Day. There's a reason we lay out spring training like we do. Right now, guys are not supposed to be playing every day.

[My swing is] almost there. It's a lot better than where it was earlier. I'm not here to put up numbers in spring training. The goal is to be ready by Opening Day. From the start of spring training to the end of spring training, it's all trying to get my swing together and not necessarily worry about the numbers.

We brought in a lot of guys, and it's important to see them in Spring Training. Our roster isn't set. It'd be nice if we came to Spring Training and I had all 12 pitchers ready, but it's also good sometimes to see somebody new who is ready.

[DODGERS: Los Angeles doesn't figure to make more than a handful of minor league call-ups for this year's September roster expansion, a concession that the team doesn't want to crowd the clubhouse with players who won't play significant roles and the fact several current players are due off the disabled list in the near future.] That's a lot of guys here already, even though we only have 25 active, ... There probably won't be that many guys (called up).

It's a special spring for him. He's gaining the respect of his teammates. He's gaining the respect of players he's playing against. But the bottom line it's still spring training. So, there's the dose of reality ... that there's going to be an opening day for him and he's going to be hitting .000 and he's going to have no homers. But we do like what we're seeing.

It's a timing issue. Once he had surgery, he didn't gear up to be ready for Feb. 23 or even Spring Training. He was gearing up for Opening Day. Our hope, and I think everyone's hope, would be it he could have through Spring Training, and then a determination be made.

I think he's shown the ability that he could be a very good major-league outfielder at some point. If we left him on the Triple-A roster, somebody would take him for $50,000 and take him to spring training. He could very easily make one of those clubs. . . . . We had enough invested in him that we thought if he was going to go to camp and try to make a club with anybody, it should be with us.

Guys should work every day. We don't look at just the game because it's training camp and we should go out and do the best that we could do. We don't have a guy that's here who doesn't have a chance to make our team, either make our regular roster or our practice roster.

Vin Scully is synonymous with Dodger baseball and has been for generations of fans in Los Angeles and around the world. He's an icon in Los Angeles and we're thrilled that he'll continue to be the voice of the Dodgers for years to come.

I don't see it like a race. Like I said last year, I just come to spring training to get ready for the season. It's not up to me to make a decision. They know what I can do.
