The team made a huge difference in our particular program. We had great pit stops. We were able to make up positions on every restart. We went from third to second, then second to first. We followed a strategy and the professionalism of our crew and the execution of the plan put us in a position to be able to win.

[NASCAR was quick to defend its procedures -- and they actually make a pretty good point about not dispatching crews while cars are on the track. But this is as good a time as any to get into an issue that comes up at least once a summer: having a dedicated, traveling medical and safety crew. Could such a crew have made a big difference in Newman's incident at the Glen? Who knows? But would they have made things worse? No way.] Once the team got there, they didn't have a clue what to do. I'm laying in the car, not knowing if fuel is spilling out of it, ... They asked me if the power was off. I'm trying to tell them they need to hold the car so I can get out. Communication was not there, and it needs to be there. I'm not trying to shoot down the safety crew. I just want it to be so we can communicate better and they can understand what they're doing. If there's not going to be a team that travels with NASCAR, then there needs to be better communication with the teams that are at the specific racetracks. That's all I'm saying.

The crew worked so hard to get this car on the grid. This is a small crew, so they all have to do double duty. They should be proud of their efforts this weekend. I'd also like to thank Paul Menard's DEI crew, who did a great job, handling our pit stops during the race.

[They turned east and, soon after, lost the bet. The wind dropped, they missed the most favorable position to cross the Doldrums, and they slipped to eleventh place. Fed up with the conditions, members of the crew began to lose faith in their strategy. One crew member complained that he had wasted three years of his life training for the race. We think it is a great plan and we're very supportive of the company and management and look forward to the execution of their program.

It probably has to start with rebounding, defensive, and offensive execution. Your offense is your defense sometimes. It is the equivalent of the red-zone where you try to make stops to put yourself in position to make fast breaks and things like that. Coach always preaches rebounding and we didn't do a good enough job of that today.

We just stuck to our game plan, which was to attack them, push the ball up as much as possible so they really couldn't get set up in the zone. The second-half difference was that we made defensive stops.

I have always thought that one man of tolerable abilities may work great changes, and accomplish great affairs among mankind, if he first forms a good plan, and, cutting off all amusements or other employments that would divert his attention, make the execution of that same plan his sole study and business.

I've wanted to be an AD, and there are not a whole lot of these positions available. I really feel I have a chance to go there and make a difference in their program.

He made a great catch. That was a huge play. Changed the field position, put us in position to run the clock out. ... He did what he was supposed to do. Tom read it, laid it out there, and Bethel ran it down. I mean, we always tell Tom just throw it out there as far as you can and make him run for it. We started 14th and got off to a real good start and moved up pretty quick. I was running second on a lap 11 restart and I tried passing right away but couldn't make it happen. I just sort of hung around behind (Jim Young), and on a lap 18 restart I got beside him in one and two and made the pass down the backstretch.

Old reliable, our defensive effort is what sustained us. I thought we made great stops down the stretch. They have two outstanding players and a nice supporting cast, and I thought we did a good job in the fourth quarter, particularly the last four minutes, of making huge defensive stops. To look at the light and see that it's in the 'off' position, then turn it on and pour water on it and it starts flashing -- it was one of the more difficult moments for me in this investigation. We know it would have made a huge difference in the rescue if that light had been in the 'on' position.
