Glazes are very expensive. Each year I depend on student fees to pay for much of that cost.

A little over $40,000, when you think about both tuition, as well as room and board and student fees, is so expensive. However, the good part of that story, especially for Bates, is that average freshman aid packages total up to about $21,000 per student coming in as a first year. And again, that's not a loan that a student is forced to take out, that is grant aid given out from the university.

Last year we gave six scholarships of $1,000 each. This year we would like to give four scholarships of two grand each. It's tricky. Students aren't rich. They can't afford to pay more on student fees, but these organizations depend on that money. It's hard to say what's too much and what's not enough.

Every student pays an activity fee of about $72 that was used to help pay off the bonds on the Culp Center and the Mini-Dome. Both of those buildings will be paid for this year. We will take the money that was used for that and pay for the renovation. The student fees will not be raised. They will stay the same.

It's a balance. We are responding to the increasing cost pressures from fuel and government taxes and fees, and balancing that with customer requests for simple and less-expensive travel.

We estimate that families will pay about $2,400 in personal and miscellaneous expenses each year, but that's just for our school. How much a student spends will depend on the location of the school and on the student's spending habits.

The whole point of this bill was to create incentives for a technology that is currently too expensive so that over time it will become cost- competitive, ... Now, the unions will be artificially increasing the cost of the already too expensive technology in order to line their own pockets.

A year ago, average management fees were falling, but this turned around in 2005 with average management fees rising fairly strongly. The one-time cost reduction employers experience as their workers move into less expensive plans has been masking the underlying cost trend. Migration out of indemnity plans slowed to a trickle last year, so we're finally seeing real trend reflected in the national cost figures.

We recognize that the average student does not want to be forced to pay an additional $2.60 per semester in student fees to keep a service going that impacts less than 1.7 percent of the student body, or roughly 300 students. However, SGA also recognizes that however small this 1.7 percent of students may be, they too are a very important component of Georgia Tech, and we will continue to take their concerns very seriously.

We plan on continuing a lot of the work we did this year - lowering student fees, making sure we have a green campus, holding landlords accountable.

Student support of the university through tuition and fees is the fundamental issue for next year with no prospect of the state increasing funding for higher education.

The effect of this bill is that students and parents will end up getting less out of our student aid programs as a college degree continues to cost more. Students and their families need more aid in order to make college less expensive, and not the other way around.

Tuition fees are the biggest change British universities have had in years. Before they were importers, but now with the tuition fees and given the exchange rates, the cost of studying here is not much more than staying at home.
