Deep Impact and Stardust were engineered first and foremost to be able to achieve their prime missions, interaction with comets Tempel 1 and Wild 2. Although these primary missions have been the top priority, each has some capacity remaining that we are willing to make available to the space science community.

These proposed missions are very cost effective ways to provide new results that can be directly compared to the landmark Deep Impact findings as well as with the results of Deep Space 1 and Stardust.

Comets are some of the most informative occupants of the solar system. The more we can learn from science exploration missions like Stardust, the more we can prepare for human exploration to the Moon, Mars, and beyond.

U.S. customers will be able to achieve more satellite missions within a fixed space budget, allowing each end user to own its own satellite and thus achieve priority access to data. Constellations of small satellites will become financially possible due to the lower unit cost, bringing real benefits of higher temporal resolution and persistent monitoring - a new area of space applications.

The number of first-class concepts being submitted to NASA by the space science community for these smaller missions just keeps on climbing.

I think there is a move afoot to move money for science and robotic missions into the human exploration program and this is just part of it. There is a strong push to reduce the number of missions.
