Libraries believe deeply in unfettered access for the public to unfiltered information. There's just a concern that there's a slippery slope when you begin to make qualifications about that access.

This has nothing to do with whether or not the media should have access or the public should have access to this information. There are people who could use (this information) for not legitimate purposes. And that's what our concern is.

To the extent that libraries wish to offer unfiltered access, they are free to do so without federal assistance.

The decision is a reluctant one. There's a lot of concern about unfettered access to information, and that we don't want to be a group that is censoring what we are reading. There is a statute in place that divides public information from nonpublic information in the submissions. If you're a freedom-to-read person, pulling a book like that one is not that different from any book that might have fake scholarship. No matter how wrong a book might be, people should have access to it. It's a slippery slope once you start removing books like that.
