In July they denied the existence of a hunger strike two weeks after it had started. Now they seem to be understating the number of detainees involved and the gravity of the medical condition of several of the detainees. This policy once again demonstrates the lack of transparency around all US detention practices and policies in the 'war on terror'.

We are particularly concerned about the health of detainees who may have escaped this narrow definition of a hunger-striker. They may not be receiving any medical treatment. We urge that independent medical experts be given access to detainees.

It should release detainees it has no legal authority to hold. It should provide trials to detainees believed to have committed crimes and it should investigate and prosecute US officials responsible for the torture of detainees.

Fact-finding on the spot has to include interviews with detainees. What's the sense of going to a detention facility and doing fact-finding when you can't speak to the detainees? It's just nonsense.

The United States must release detainees it has no authority to hold, provide trials to detainees believed to have committed crimes, and prosecute those involved in the torture and mistreatment of captives.

I am informed that hunger strikers are being force-fed in a brutal manner bordering on the sadistic. The best way for me to check the accuracy of these and other allegations ... is to visit, see the conditions for myself, to talk privately with detainees.
