Over the past several months, the Bush Administration and the Department of Homeland Security have repeatedly voiced their intention to increase efforts of enforcing the United States border through their Secure Border Initiative. The Secure Border Initiative is a comprehensive multi-year plan to secure America's borders and reduce illegal immigration. We certainly need to secure the borders. I'm opposed to a border system that works like a sieve We also have to work to make sure the Mexican economy is where it should be so they're not as motivated to cross the border.

Most of the things that come across the border aren't being tested. So we can't rely on the federal government to protect us at the border.

The first problem is we've had this border opened and people coming across the border for the last several years with no checks and balances. It's just like water going over a dam when a lake gets full. The borders have not been secure. The borders are porous.

We can no longer compromise America's border security, allowing potentially dangerous individuals and materials to slip freely across the border and into our country, ... We must boldly address the challenges of border security first, which is why I will start the debate in the Senate with a measure that aggressively strengthens and improves enforcement at the border.
