This acquisition will enhance our ability to deliver large-scale Ethernet solutions and will allow us to accelerate the development of next-generation, carrier-grade Ethernet solutions that enable our customers to deliver broadband services to businesses and residential subscribers.

We're pleased to have Foundry Networks as a founding member of the Ethernet Alliance. Foundry was a very active member in the 10 Gigabit Ethernet Alliance, successfully promoting this important technology from its inception over five years ago. We look forward to their participation in the new Ethernet Alliance as we promote the acceptance and application of current and emerging Ethernet standards in a broad range of environments.

Cisco has laid out a vision and architecture for Carrier Ethernet that provides service providers a broad selection of flexible options across all network domains. Cisco announced products today that deliver a number of important network services at cost-effective price points, adding to Cisco's already large portfolio.

With the integration of voice, video and data traffic … networks are no longer just pipelines of data. The greater reliance on networks requires a much more real-time approach to network management.

Rollouts of triple-play access infrastructure and business Ethernet services infrastructure will drive demand for reconfigurable optical network systems. Ethernet and triple play will push a lot of traffic onto carrier interoffice facilities and metro core facilities, requiring more than simple, incremental bandwidth additions. The unique transport requirements of these services will force operators to move to a new generation of optical systems and architectures.

Within days of our public launch, the Ethernet Alliance received numerous requests from companies who wanted to join. These new members truly represent the diversity of Ethernet from the carrier to the consumer. We are especially pleased to have Cisco as a member of the Ethernet Alliance and look forward to welcoming them to the board of directors.

Although Ethernet has existed for more than 25 years, it does not have an industry voice that represents the spectrum of IEEE 802 Ethernet standards developments and serves the IEEE 802 Ethernet industry as a whole. With the strong support of our founding members, the Ethernet Alliance will be that voice, and we will move aggressively to accelerate the growth and expansion of IEEE 802 Ethernet technologies.

With the acquisition of Tasman Networks, Nortel will strengthen its position as an innovator in providing resilient end-to-end converged, secure IP telephony and multimedia networks. We anticipate that the Tasman products will complement our enterprise infrastructure solutions and further our ability to provide seamless, feature-rich networks that support critical real-time applications - including voice, video, and streaming multimedia applications.

With the acquisition of Tasman Networks, Nortel will strengthen its position as an innovator in providing resilient end-to-end converged, secure IP telephony and multimedia networks.
